Need some help: AIM-9 Sidewinder upper tube
My rocketry club got a box of "leaving the hobby" donations.
One item is a Estes kit # 2121 AIM-9 Sidewinder. It was missing the upper section, which consists of a plastic coupler/boat tail, a plastic nose cone, a piece of slotted BT-55, four canard fins, and an internal piece of BT-20 (I think) which connects the boat tail and cone. Becasue I don't want to go to the time and expense of finding the plastic cone unit, I would like to "fake up" an upper section. I picked out a 5520 balsa transition section which I'll carve into the rough shape of the cone. I'll mock up the tail cone by adding a few inches to the upper body and adding paper strips. Now . . . one thing I could use help with is the length of that upper body, and the position of the fin slots. Does anyone have a Sidewinder handy they could measure? Plan is to fix up the model, then donate it to a newbie family when the small rocket launch field opens for the year.

I have a built Sidewinder on the shelf and I’ll get you the dimensions. Also, I have a spare 2-part nose cone. PM your address to me if you want it.

Here’s the info.
The length of the upper BT55 is 3 13/16”. The root edge (NOT the slot) of each fin begins at 1/8” from the top of the tube and ends at the 7/8” from the bottom of the tube. I don’t have the dimension of the inner BT20, but if you do indeed want my extra cone assembly you’ll be able to extrapolate the length. I suppose the inner BT20 is only needed if you’re going to slot-mount the fins.

You’re welcome. IIRC, the only reason I have a spare Sidewinder cone is because at one time the Designer Special came with one. The cone I’ve sent you is actually well traveled: it’s the cone that I sent to Sirius Rocketry for use as a Moldin’ Oldies pattern.

Going down to hunt up BT-55 scraps and get this going.
Thanks again!
