Default On Building Typhon

In another thread, Typhon was mentioned as a potential scale subject and Blackshire sorta went off on what he'd like to see. Rather than further clutter up that thread, I thought I'd bring it over here for some discussion.

For those who don't know, Typhon was the last off-shoot of the US Navy Project Bubblebee missile development program dating back to World War II. This same project led to the famous three T's: Talos, Tartar and Terrier, the surface-to-air missiles that lead to the present day Standard missile. Talos was the largest of these three and in some ways the most capable. But what you may not have realized was that the sustainer in the Talos was really a ram-jet; Talos was a cruise missile. Talos made the first combat surface-to-air kill for a US missile (MiG-17) and the first combat surface-to-surface missile attack (used as an Anti-Radiation Missile (ARM) against a North Vietnamese radar site).

But Talos was big, real big. And its radar could only track two targets at a time. Typhon was to be a signifcantly smaller missile set to use the same Mk. 10 launcher as Tartar and Terrier. It's ram-jet was smaller but offered more range and speed than Talos. The radar guidance system for Typhon missile lead directly to the modern-day Aegis system. The missile was cancelled in 1963. The radar system continued to be deveolped as a potential Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) system.

Keeping it brief, in the early Sixties, nine Typhon development rockets were fired at White Sands. They featured the Typhon sustainer boosted by a Talos booster, presumably to test the Mach 4.1 ram-jet.

Typhon scale data is not exactly thick on the ground. It was reportedly 16.7 inches in diameter. That fact plus the attached drawing plus some Alway scale data on a Talos booster would allow us to sport scale this in 1/10 scale.

We'd need:

13.25" of 3" tubing, preferably with fin slots for the Talos Booster
16.21" of ST-16 or BT-60 tubing
A custom dome-shaped transition from Gordy for 3" to ST- 16 center-drilled for ST-16
Either a ram-jet style ST-16 nose cone or a BT-50 come (see below)

The only really tricky part would be the sustainer fins as they have significant fillets.

Then you have some decisions to make: Is it to be two stage? If so, the sustainer could be made with a core BT-50 for a 24mm upper stage engine and full length stand-offs to allow ram air flow around the core in the interior. I think this is what Blackshire was suggesting. But that leaves the problem of igniting the sustainer. One possible solution would be a 2 motor 24mm cluster in the Talos portion with the first motor being a D12-0 ducted to the base of the sustainer as a gap stage and the other engine a D12-3 to eject the recovery of the Talos portion. On-board electronics would be another possible solution.

Single stage would be easy: 29mm power with no duct work in the Typhon section as it doesn't matter.

Ideas? Suggestions?

Thank you for creating an "entry" for the Typhon here, in the Scale and Sport Scale sub-forum. Yes, I was thinking in terms of having gap-staged (with optional streamer or parachute booster recovery; the short Talos booster might not need it, possibly being able to utilize tumble recovery instead), ducted-rocket augmentor set-ups in scale models of the Talos/LAST/Vandal and Typhon, although ducting isn't necessary. I was thinking in terms of scale flight realism, including wide smoke trails (but the Estes Teros, Wasp, and Wolverine kits--which were all ramjet-nose, scale-like models--flew just fine with no ducting at all). With the readily-available 3D printing services for having model rocket parts custom-made now, the Typhon's highly-filleted fins need not be a "show-stopper."

Profile-wise the Typhon looks a bit like the Nike-Hercules.
