Default Beta 2-stage question

Comrades:

Was the Estes Beta two-stager originally for shorty 18mm engines?

I have a eBay rescue that I'm trying to figure out.

I'll post pictures in Bill's Rescue thread.

FWIW, besides adapting 13mm motors to the application - I have used A10-0T to ½A-4T many times - the A8-0, A8-5 and B6-0 all have enough empty space forward to allow cutting them down to 1.75" long. (Shhhh! Don't tell anybody!)

And I've used 1/4A3-0T to 1/4A3-3T (Shhhh! What Doug said!)

Has anyone gap-staged 13mm motors? I've heard it's difficult due to small nozzle. I've built a gap-staged Double Mini Max but have not tried to fly it. I suppose I could tape the booster to the launch pad and see if the upper stage lights and flies away!

The A10 has a pretty wide nozzle which is a plus for gap staging, but it's partially cored and that's a negative. I say try it and see!

That sounds somewhat familiar ... whenever my buddies and I flew rockets at the vacant lot, there was always a question of using too much motor ...

"Should I use the C motor?"

Everyone else "I would if I were you".
