Estes super vega
Hi
I am new to your site and recently started building rockets again. I wanted to buy a Super Vega rocket years ago and recently found one still sealed in the box for $35.00. I was planning on building it but when it came I started having second thoughts since it was in such nice shape. Are they collectable enough that I should not build it or just have the fun put it together? Thanks for the advice Sewerrat |

At that price, I'd build it unless you plan to be a collector. I tried it. Takes up too much space for me.

I really don't understand collecting unbuilt rocket kits. Actually, I don't understand collecting built rocket kits. When I run out of storage room it's time for a bunch of C motors.

If it were me, I'd hang on to it, or sell it to a collector for more than what you paid for it, and use the money to fund your hobby. Failing that.... I'd build it.
Verify the following: Based on doing some scant research, the Estes QCC Explorer uses the same nose cone and plastic parts as the Super Vega. Estes is selling the kit for $20. It's $11.99 at AC Supply. Your original kit could potentially buy you all the parts you need, plus other stuff to get you going. Decals might be a problem though.... -Wolf |

I understand. I was unemployed back in the 1990's in a bad way. Really bad. Finding old kits in forgotten hobby shops and selling them for up to 4X the price was one source of creative income that I was able to hustle up that fed my family and paid my rent. Imagine selling just the decal from a kit for $100. Fortunately, I don't have to do that now.... but I learned a lot from that experience. -Wolf |

I thought there was a current kit that used the cone, but I couldn't remember what it was. Gordy can provide a new set of decals. I just scanned my sticker set and made a set of waterslides because I hate the stickers. Now to rebuild one of my two corpses.

Did you really sell just the decal from a kit for a Franklin?

Yes. It was an original Centuri IRIS decal. -W |
