Need 1961-1962 Estes catalog info
Over on the Ninfinger website is a copy of what is described as the "2nd" 1961 Estes model rocket catalog.
Since the Astron Space plane is included in this catalog, and since I happen to know that the Astron Space plane was developed in mid to late 61, and as the original Schultz BG was flown in August 1961 at Naram-3 , what I am trying to determine is when the "2nd" 1961 estes catalog was issued... and or available to customers. I assume this "2nd" 61 catalog came out in late 1961, after august 1961? Has anybody ever seen or heard of the "1st" estes 1961 catalog? The "1st" Estes catalog had to be produced prior to the 6/7 1961 move from Denver to Penrose. It was during this time frame, that John Schutz created his BG design. I also notice that there is NO 1962 Estes catalog.... did the 2nd 1961 Estes catalog also serve as its 1962 catalog? Does anybody have any insight into the publication dates of the early estes catalogs? ie the 63/64/65/66/67 ones? any info will be appreciated. tia terry dean nar 16158 |

Terry, Randy Liebermann wrote extensively about the 1961 catalog (No. 261) in the July 1995 issue (Volume 1, No. 3) of The Rocketeer Collectors Journal. The first edition of No. 261 was released in February or March of 1961 and carried the Denver address. This was the one famously stitched by Gleda Estes. The second edition dates from August through December of 1961 and carries the Penrose address. It was the third edition that introduced The Space Plane and the Mark. That version was released in December of '61 or January of '62. Again, Randy goes into great depth about the way you can tell between versions, including a shipping error on the second edition which says "F.O.B Denver" even though the catalog address lists Penrose. That error was corrected for the third, (Space Plane) edition. In all, there apparently were at least five editions of the 1961 catalog. There basically was no 1962 catalog. The final version of No. 261 was replaced on December 9, 1962 by Catalog No. 631. Again, all of this comes from Randy's article. And as Randy says, there may have actually been more than five versions of 261. I personally own two versions of it—both from Penrose. One of them belonged to Orville Carlisle. It was mailed to him on August 29, 1962, and bears some of his hand-written comments and underlines. Neat stuff. Mark

That would probably have to be cleared with Danny Sagstetter.

Absolutely. Randy and I have discussed a new series that would update those Rocketeer Collector's Journal articles. There are so many unpublished details: Even the thread count changed in those early stitched copies of 261. But until we begin the series early next year, I would recommend that anyone interested should contact the Journal's publisher and editor, Danny Sagstetter, and buy a copy of all 13 issues. Great stuff. Scott Hansen posted Danny's contact info on another YORF thread. Mark

Scott, I completely agree. Danny has the copyright on all Journal articles. The new LAUNCH series will update from there, and of course will include the kind of visuals that the Journal couldn't include with its production format. But truly, Danny started it all, and as I said in the earlier post, everyone interested should get their hands on a set of those 13 issues. (And when you contact him, ask him about the infamous 14th issue that he never got around to publishing. I think it's high time that we all got to read it!) Mark
