I remember three of the big distributors (Great Planes, Horizon Hobby & Hobby Dynamics) were located in Champaign, IL. United Models was located a fair distance away. I remember Gary and I driving to United Models from our hotel and it was the better part of a day to get there and back (Traffic).

It appears United Models has since relocated as their website now lists them in Champaign, IL, also.

What ever happened with the Enertek Astrobee 1500 ?
It looks like Aerotech produced a lot of the models, but not that one.

I also appreciate this first-person history. While none of the Estes Pro Series kits other than the Terrier-Sandhawk appealed to me, the stories of all of the people, plans, arrangements, and "might-have-been" deals are fascinating!

Default Loving the info

Bob;
I really enjoyed reading the history. I'm late to the party because I've been away from the forum for a while.
I can verify one thing for you!

I actually have a Pro Series Patriot that I never built, Started it one time, didn't like the 4 cluster and it couldn't take the longer motors either!!!
It does indeed have an aluminum heat shield for the aft centering ring, about 3/32" thick.
It even has notches for the engine retaining clips.

I still plan to build it some day, but It's getting a 29mm mount for my Aerotek Reloadable motors! I'm thinking a G75 will really make her fly ;-)
But an H49 will be real close to the original impulse, just a lot more duration (over 6.75 seconds of thrust, woot!!!).
Rocksim is again my friend ;-)
If I go with the G75, Adding more thrust means a bit of structure improvement is also in order, it never ends, does it?

Like all but the Initiator, none of the Enertek models were ever put in production.

It's a shame someone didn't market that model, or at least the plans to build one. Great looking rocket, especially in that size.

I enjoy re-reading this thread every once-in-a-while.

I have another Estes Pro Series story.

In 1992 I had started building the Impulse Pro Series kit.
I did not finish it before I left AeroTech and it was packed away to be worked on another day.

That 'day' turned into several decades.

Cut to 2018 and NARAM-60.
NARAM-60 would be held in Colorado not too far from Penrose where Estes is located.
Estes was bound to have a sizable representation at NARAM so I decided to do something special.

My friend Mike Fritz (Estes Marketing Director) would be at NARAM and told me about an old Pro Series Impulse kit box which had been laying around in his office for a long time.

That was all I needed to hear.

I found my half-started Impulse kit and finished it.
I took it with me to NARAM-60 but I never did get a chance to fly it.

However, I did have the chance to show the model to Mike and we posed for a picture together holding the Impulse model (I believe Roy Green took the picture).

Mike is retired now but at least he was able to see the model whose box graced his office for so many years.

Beautiful! It is one of my favorite original PS kit. I bought rings to clone it if a decal is ever scanned and posted.

I wrote an article for LAUNCH magazine about the history of Enerjet. Here's a link:

Is this material available somewhere else today?

That old link appears to be dead.

Not sure how to find another copy online.
