Default Estes Saturn 2001 and 1236

I have these two kits and when looking through the boxes, I noticed most of the parts are identical. Obviously the body tubes are different lengths, but the plastic parts and wraps are the same. I am not a history buff on these kits, but looks like if one wanted to build the 1236, they could use the 2001 kit, is this correct?

Can't answer the question, but that sure is a nice looking 1236 you've got there!

Seems to me like you could. Internally, just rework it so that it separates up top. Externally, you would have to cut the fins smaller and work the shrouds to make up for the smaller fin size. Is the Apollo capsule and LES identical also?

The fins are smaller on the K-36/1236 when compared to the 2001.
The recovery separation point is different on the two as well.
The 2002 separates at the first transition directly above the BT101 main body tube, whereas the K-36/1236 separates at the capsule.
The separation point was revised on the 2002 due to numerous failures to eject the laundry of the K-36/1236 when powered by a single D12 was my understanding. That D12 ejection charge had to pressurize a LOT of tube in that arrangement. 3xC5-3 or 3xC6-3 clusters had no problem though as the 3 C's had about 50% more ejection powder than a D12.

Yes, there is such a thing as NORMAL
, if you have to ask what is "NORMAL" , you probably aren't !

Failure may not be an OPTION, but it is ALWAYS a POSSIBILITY.
ALL systems are GO for MAYHEM, CHAOS, and HAVOC !

When I built my 1236 I made the seperation point the same as the 2001, I then made copies of the fins of the 2001 put them on the 1236, had no problems with the flight.

Wow! That is how my K-36/1236 failed on its first launch........many, many years ago! I just assumed it was a bad parachute pack!
