Looking for a flying Lunar Module
Folks,
A good friend is organinzing a national event next year which will include rocket flights commemorating the Apollo 11 flight. There will be a number of Apollo themed flights and the hope is to include a flying Lunar Module as well. If any of you know of someone who has built and flown one please let me know. Thanks, Steve |

I remember seeing a post on one of the forums where somebody built a large LM drone.

Steve,
I assume you are familiar with the one that George Gassaway made based on a quadcopter. There’s an extensive thread over on that other forum about it. And I see Rich Harshberger over there gave you the same answer....

Yes, I've seen George's great helicopter model as well. But what we're looking for is a rocket-propelled model. |

I noticed you did NOT say it has to fly well or predictably.
Do a PMC on the plastic kit. Those always have a whacky flight path with ever-present possibility of a POWR-PRANGG. Adds a "real" potential for disaster NASA flavor. Boring a hole in the bottom of the lander for an engine mount should be easy. Have it "tumble" recover after ejecting the engine. Be prepared for "Broom-'n-Trash Bag" final recovery.

Failure may not be an OPTION, but it is ALWAYS a POSSIBILITY. ALL systems are GO for MAYHEM, CHAOS, TURMOIL, FIASCOS, and HAVOC ! Last edited by ghrocketman : 08-14-2018 at 12:30 PM. |

Another great option to build yourself a flying model of the lunar lander is to do a paper model over a foam core skeleton. It's got great advantages such as cheap and light weight. And being cheap you can build many copies, and tweak the flight characteristics, even if they cash, well tumble recovery is a very good option for a model made that light.

Well.... there's THIS:
The Ascent Stage is a 3X scale-up print of a 1/48 Cardboard model pattern with some foamboard structure inside. Descent stage main structure is balsa and basswood, plus lots of other stuff for the legs and details Link: https://www.rocketryforum.com/threa...project.137174/
