Come to think of it, I don't recall EVER using a commercial launch controller. I've always made my own.

I made this one c. 25 years ago and I still use it. It has (2) 9V batteries wired in parallel for the firing voltage. Every component is from Radio Shack (except the labels.)

Ah--thank you. Yes, that's my Moon Mutt mini launch pad, and the launch controller is the same color as in the picture (that's interesting that chrism's Moon Mutt Launch Set came with a black launch controller; I've had four or five sets that I gave away, but they all came with yellow launch controllers). Two of them--to my surprise after receiving them--were actual *Starter Sets*, containing mini motors and having a notice sticker about the motors on each of their boxes--but the eBay vendor mailed them to me anyway!

As I have been learning about some of the history of Estes ground support equipment between my leaving the hobby in the early 1970s and my return about six years ago, I've seen all sorts of mixtures - so I'm not surprised some Moon Mutt sets had the black EB and some had the more recent sealed (so you can't get exposed to the lead on the back of the continuity lamp) yellow one.

Also, in the course of my getting a bunch of old GSE from eBay I've gotten quite a few motors shipped to me and seen many listed sometimes by themselves despite eBay's supposed policy.

I'd wondered what had prompted the change to the encapsulated light bulb. That whole lead-in-toys business was w-a-y too extreme to be sensible (there'd be more danger of a toddler choking on an un-screwed bulb or breaking its glass envelope), but it created more collectable items... :-)

While I'd never mail any (the regulation against it is ridiculous, but I don't want to be put in a cage), I view them as "bonus items"...(the new Quest MicroMaxx igniters should, in theory, be legal to mail, because they have no pyrogen; they're just wire).
