They turned out great. The rounded nose looks something like a mini-Goony When I've used a clear coat over a metalic surface, it's always screwed up the paint. I would never had known you used a clear coat. I'm planning on using Future as a clear coat (yeah, I'm a wimp.....don't want to take a chance of messing up the finish on this bird).

No, in the Scout, the long end is aft in order to ensure catching the motor. EDIT: Well, just to be sure, I referred back to the original Estes instructions, and sure enough, the long end is forward in the instructions. However, the two or three Scouts I built over the years, I put the long end AFT and never had a problem with accidental motor ejection. Others, building theirs the other way, did have occasional ejections, which is not really a good thing with a Scout (think of the average Quark or Swift so-called "Featherweight" recoveries, usually an inch or so deep in the ground). I guess I internalized the way I always did them to be the correct way.

Look at the instructions, step 3, the longest end of the hook goes into the small hole in the body tube which is into the nose cone, otherwise, you won't be able to get the motor in. If the longest end of the hook was in the bottom, it would be in the way of the exhaust. Once again, check step 3 of the instructions............. |

Over the years, the short end of the hook was bent up slightly to capture the engine on it's way backward. If you go to step 16 Prepare for flight, it suggests that you use a balsa shim to go along side the motors to prevent it from kicking forward after the ejection charge goes off.
The reason why the long end goes into the nose cone is to retain the nose cone as a better assurance besides the glue joint. Long end forward into nose cone, short end below fins. |

I would appreciate it if you would use this thread to post photos only of your Golden Scout builds, launches etc.
I can start another thread regarding building the Golden Scout Go to "Building the Socut" for all other discussions Thanks RD |
