Super Disco Bertha
Just a Super Big Bertha clone, BT80 tube, 80BB plastic nose cone; Light Ply surface mounted fins… nothing fancy –
But the paint job – my daughter’s idea – garnered a lot of attention. Several folks came up to ask about it. She had a blast (pun intended) flying it Saturday (rain) and Sunday (wind). The paint job is just a base of white primer, and then she hit it with every fluorescent color we could find. The hard part was to get her to use the color “sparingly” and not try to cover every inch of the rocket with color. We made the name decal with clear decal paper on our inkjet printer. To seal the decals and make it extra sparkly, we gave it a top coat of “clear glitter spray” that we found at one of the craft stores. Saturday at Bong we flew it on an E20-4w (single use). We missed the heavy rain, and it was just a light drizzle when we flew. We had ignition failure on our first attempt using the igniters that come with the motors. They look like a small version of the first fire Jr’s. I swapped igniters, but that probably was not the issue. I really think dirty/grimy clips were the problem. We used an 18” nylon chute – which became totally tangled upon ejection. Bertha landed in the long grass north of the runway – completely undamaged!!! Due to the drizzle, we decided to head home. Sunday was nice and sunny… and windy. The batteries in my anemometer were dead, but I’m guessing the breeze was about 10-15mph from the SSE. Most everyone’s rockets were weather cocking into the wind, some more than others. Bertha flew again on the E20 (they come in a 2 pack). This time I brought an emery board with me to the pad to clean the clips off a bit. Worked like a charm. The chute opened this time, but she got a small half inch zipper – I’m blaming the wind. We had a keychain video camera taped on the side of the rocket. I missed your flight on Sunday, but not Saturday. The E20 was a great choice. Love the paintjob!

Scott-Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. My daughter loved the paint job so much, she is going to put it on the LOC 4-29SS we just finished.
