Default 65th Anniversary of the Bell X-1 Flight

On October 14,2012, this will be the 65th anniversary of the Charles "Chuck"Yeager flight in the Bell X-1 that broke the sound barrier.

The flight was on October 14 ,1947

The powerplant was the Reaction Motors, Inc XLR-11 6000 lb thrust motor.

It was designed, developed , built and tested at their Pompton Plains NJ facility.

RMI was at this locationf from 1943 until 1946.

They made much too much noise and went to Lake Denmark near Picatinny Arsenal in Dover NJ.

Reaction Motors, Inc also produced the XLR-99 for the X-15.

The test stand "E" still remains on Snake Hill Road on Picatinny property.

The test stand was built using 6 million pounds of concrete and could withstand a continuous thrust of 1 million pounds.

The XLR-99 produced a max thrust of 50,000 lbs.
