Where do you fly? Maybe we can get together for a joint outing (I don't have a recovery crew ).

The pasture behind my house. I haven't flown anywhere else since I quit doing HPR/EX. I have been thinking about going somewhere else so I can fly some of my two stagers.

Default Great Shots

The photography makes the post! Well done, and not easy as many of us will attest. My ineptitude with a camera has cost this forum many a post.

I must get a lantern battery so I can dust off my old launcher. Nobody seems to carry them anymore and its a shame. I never ran out of juice, even after a number of outings. That battery and my sureshot igniters never failed.

Please keep those pictures coming; it warms the heart like cute pet photos.

Bob - try Radio Shack for those lantern batteries.

Tim - let me add my voice to the chorus and say "Well done!" on the photos.

Oh, yeah, what is that thing that is continuing to shoot upward and trailing smoke in the last photo? Part of the "shotgun slug?"

Thanks. It's probably a chunk of the supersized ejection charge or a chunk of the delay train if it burned through unevenly and allowed ejection before being consumed. I'm not really sure which.

The 12v lantern battery came from a place called "The Battery Store". Catchy name, eh?

Yup...in the pic, it looks like your rocket just lit its sustainer.

The Battery Store - I've looked through their site before, as well as Batteries.com (another catchy name) and eBatteriesToGo. 8^) Lantern batteries aren't so common anymore, but they are still being made, and I regularly see one or two of them on the shelf when I visit my local RS.

Very nice photos. The D80 is quite a camera. I have both a D70 and a D200 that I use and I really like both of them. I agree with you about shooting in shutter priority in the future. If you can get the shutter speed up to 1/1000 or faster you'll get much clearer photos of the rockets when they're moving.

Oh, and it looks like your post's title was totally on target - beautiful sunny day, with no clouds evident. After this past summer, I had almost forgotten what a clear, sunny day looked like.

I'm not a photographer (not a good one, at least), but I'll bet that, if you can get a clear, sunny day, that shooting some launches at this time of year could produce some pretty nice pictures. With the sunlight coming in at a low angle, you could get some great side lighting of the rocket as it goes up. Your shots of the Lil' Herc especially illustrate this phenomenon, I think.

The low sunlight angle can really help when you launch small rockets - you can follow them better than at any other time of the year. I do most of my micromaxx flying in the Fall for this very reason. We have actually had a few of those kind of days up here in the past month, but I didn't get out to fly (too busy with Santa stuff).
