Always thought that kit was awful then and is still awful now.
Wouldn't offer $1.98 for one.

Why would Semroc need to reproduce it?? Dr. Zooch already has, for years... you can get them from Apogee and others right now...

I didn't think about that. I have a Apollo 5 Saturn IB downstairs waiting for me to start on it.

Yep... I've built the Zooch Saturn V... Wes patterned it directly after the BT-60 Estes Saturn V, with "improvements" (like no dorky "supplemental fins")

It flies great and looks good for that size of a Saturn V... I've got a build thread on it somewhere around here...

I love his kits. They take a some skills to make them look 'scale' but when completed, they look fantastic! Prices are quite fair, too. I have built several, and it never fails at a sponsored launch, folks want to know all about them. Nothing on the market comes close for the size or impression. They are challenging to build and are a nice change of pace even for the experienced builder. The finished Dr.Zooch rockets all look quite nice! I have nearly every kit he offers and have built 5. I like to scale mine up; even cut tiny wire to make a realistic escape tower on my Sat.1B.

Agree, love the Dr. Zooch kits...

I thought GH was referring to the original Estes kit being lousy...

I was referring to the original Estes K-39 semi-scale Saturn V as being a POS.
That kit could and should have been SO much more detailed.
I have no problem with the Dr. Zooch kits and like them.
His Mercury Redstone is a nice re-creation of a simpler Estes K-41, his Space Shuttle full-stack is nice, and the Pointy-nose Saturn I is really cool.

Sorry GH; no offense intended!
Because your response was after Luke's, I thought you were referring to the Dr.Zooch kits.
The main reason I like the old Estes Bt-60 Sat V is its nostalgic value to me. I built one when I was 12 ( I think) and thought it was cool. Have to agree with you on the clear fins for stability, though. The one on EBay now is WAY out of my price range, tho!

Wes has basically said the Estes BT-60 Saturn V was the inspiration for the Zooch Saturn V... only he wanted to do it better, without the stupid supplementary fins and with greater detail...

It's a nice looking and nice flyer. Dunno about the Estes one-- never had one or seen one built...

My dad in 1979 picked up the K-41 Mercury Redstone, 1284 full-stack Space Shuttle, and the semi-scale K-39 Saturn V kits for me to build together with him when I was 9 years old.
To this day the ONLY thing I have ever returned to a hobby shop was that K-39 Saturn V.
At age 9 I knew it was a POS and don't know what Dad was thinking. Returned it and picked up a Nike-Ajax and LTV Scout instead. I actually explained to Dad at age 9 why the K-39 was such a lousy kit. He then agreed and we headed back to the hobby shop.
