Default Estes Astron Ranger rebuild

I got this Astron Ranger payload section as a part of the lot of Estes parts that I won on Ebay. Everything is in decent shape to start, with only some sanding and filling needed in the nose cone.

Nose cone filled, awaiting finish:

Test fitting the new booster tube:

Nose cone sanded and ready for primer. Vintage die-crunch fins from an Ebay Big Bertha.

MMMM.... Ranger. Very nice. I'm woking on a "Baby Ranger" (3x13mm cluster Baby Bertha... like no one has ever done that before :rolleyes

What brand-o-schmutz did you smear all over the nose?

I'm gonna have to watch this thread...

I've never seen a Baby Ranger before. Is this going to be a goony-esque Ranger? That sounds like a cool project, and the perfect size for a 3x13mm cluster. The Mini Bertha would also be a cool build for this cluster.
The stuff on the nose is just the normal Elmer's Fill & Finish, or whatever they call it these days. (You can see the stuff on the left in the last picture.) I'm going to try priming the cone tomorrow. Hopefully whatever the old paint was won't react badly with the new paint.

Actually I made a baby Ranger kit years ago using 3 x 13mm motors in a BT-56.

Fit real nice too.

Oh, yeah. Forgot that the Mini Bertha is BT-20 based. Ah, well. The infirmities of old age.

This is what I accomplished at work over the course of the evening. I'd glue on a fin whenever I found myself at my desk, and came out with the thing sitting amazingly flush on all four fins. Apparently I eyeballed real good. No motor mount yet, and it will probably be at least Saturday before I have the chance to do anything else on it. It's Friday, and football calls in the Commonwealth. My Birds are in Boyle County tonight, so I've got a road trip in my afternoon plans.

Primed the lower section tonight. I'm going to prime the fins and sand them until almost smooth, but in keeping with the spirit of things, I'm going to leave the tube spirals as they are. Anyone ever experiment with a removable cluster mount? I'd like to make this one flyable on the traditional 3x18mm cluster, as well as a 24 mm C/D/E.

I think MarkG over on TRF has, but with mixed results. He posted a couple of threads about it over there three or four months ago.

Bill,

Here are my write-ups on remove-able, interchangeable motor mounts. I came up with the first one motivated the same as you. HTH. Doug .

Bill, how about building another booster section with a 24mm motor mount and attaching the payload section with a snap swivel to make them interchangeable?
