Default Centuri Satellite Killer (clone) Build Thread

Tonight I plan on starting the build of my long-awaited (to me anyway) build of the
Centuri Satellite Killer. Since I have been unsuccessful in winning a complete kit on
that auction site, I decided to clone it.

I got the original kit plans from JimZ's website and most of the parts from Semroc.
I didn't realize the BT-56 called for in the instructions were actually "Series 13" tubes
when I placed my original order, so it looks like another one is on the way...

Anyway I'll be working on the fiberboard parts first while I wait for the extra parts to
come in. I'll post photos as the work progresses.

Anyone know where I can get a good set of decals? Gordy?

The originals were alumanized self-stick. Someone could do a rerun of the originals for about $300 and have a lifetime supply. The magic of the original kit was it was a die cut thing. one could reproduce the entire kit system for $1000 and have enough to choke a few elephants.

Bill would be my first choice to spearhead that. I would be the second choice if someone else did the artwork and I did the supplier management. Heck, I could even capitalize that and arrange for permanent distribution by a third party.

Maybe 3 other variants would be in order?

Got to Hobby Lobby yesterday to get the fiberboard for the fins and started cutting them out.
Finished today. I think the board I got is a little too thick (1/16") but they had a hard time
finding .05" board so I took the closest thing we could find.

In between cutting the fins out, to give my fingers a rest, I decided to build the New Way Space Models'
"Qudrasaurus". Another unique model, this time with the fins on the edges of the body "tube"
instead of on the flat sides. Turns out my guillotine fin alignment rig, while useless for normal
New Way models, was perfectly suited for this one

Anyway, I have all of the fins cut out now and I'm just waiting on my Semroc order of tubes to
come in (should be here Monday) so I can finish putting it all together.

Now what should I build to fill the time.................

Ok, my parts order from Semroc arrived yesterday, so I spent last night watching the
"game" between LSU and Alabama working on my Satellite Killer.

First, I constructed the engine mount then I cut the BT-56 body tubes to size (since
Semroc didn't have 2" sections and I didn't think to ask them to cut them for me).

Finally I started putting the fins on the main body tube. I decided not to try to cut out
holes on the fins because I don't trust myself to do it right. I have four of the fins glued
on as of this morning. I'll put the last one on before I leave for work in a little bit.

Dale,
Looks good so far. I like the square rocket also. It is the "Quadzilla" though. I do like "Quadrasaurus" but, not sure what it would look like. Anyway, keep up the good work.

Well, drat! Don't know how I missed spelling the name correctly. Oops!
Sorry! Well it's a darn cool rocket no matter how you spell it

Satellite Killer build itself is finished, so I took it out today to fly at the Alamo Rocketeers
club launch. First I tried a C6-5 because I wanted to be sure it was pointing downwards
when the ejection charge went off. Turns out I needn't have bothered - it turned over
pretty much as the engine burned out. It hit a trailer and then bounced on the ground
before the ejection charge. The second launch was on on a C6-3 and didn't fare much
better.

Here is a photo before the first launch. I'll have videos up soon.

I really need an 18mm engine with a bigger punch than the C6 to get this thing flying
properly. I figure it's twice as heavy as the original due to the fiberboard I used.

Here is a short video of the launch today including the Satellite Killer.

Launch Video

Not sure what engine I need to be using on this thing, but it definitely needs to
be more powerful than a C6!

Great videos Dale! I liked when your SK hit the ground and then the ejection charge went off!
