Macgregor is gonna love that cold powered one, Leo! Are you able to bring that one, too?

Probably not because I have limited space in my luggage.

Well, looking at the responses in this thread I'd have to say that I seem to be the last of the Coldpower breed.

You may very well be the last one (or be very close to it). Even in their heyday, the Vashon Industries (and later Estes Industries) Cold Propellant (see: http://www.ninfinger.org/rockets/ca...74/74est42.html & http://www.ninfinger.org/rockets/ca...74/74est44.html ) and ColdPower Convertible (see: http://www.ninfinger.org/rockets/no...a/76est046.html ) model rockets were never as popular or widespread as the solid propellant model rockets, and the ban on their Freon-12 (RP-100) propellant killed them. Also:

I always wanted to fly one--my only Cold Propellant rocket was an Estes "Screamin' Eagle" rocket car (see: http://www.ninfinger.org/rockets/no...a/76est044.html ), and its performance whetted my curiosity at how such rockets performed in flight. From the description G. Harry Stine gave in the Fourth Edition of his "Handbook of Model Rocketry," the Cold Propellant (metal body) rockets flew like large, full-scale liquid propellant rockets--a slow liftoff followed by gradual acceleration, with high acceleration shortly before brenschluss--in other words, a very realistic liquid-fueled rocket flight profile! Do your ColdPower Convertible rockets also fly this way?

No, not at all. Flight profile would be similar to a B6-4 launch in the same rocket.

I will try to launch a Coldpower rocket with an altimeter logger to measure the acceleration so I can compare it to solid propellant flights.

Interesting...well, the metal Cold Propellant models (Valkyrie 1 & 2, Sandpiper, etc.) were mostly propellant (regarding their liftoff masses), which resulted in lower initial acceleration, while the ColdPower Convertible rockets were less so. Even so, that doesn't make the ColdPower Convertible rockets less realistic, as high thrust/mass ratio full-scale liquid propellant rockets (the Taifun, Bullpup, Lance, etc.) had/have high launch accelerations.

I finished my Estes Magician today.

This was a 'give it your best' build. Instead of silver I opted for silver/grey to give the nose cone section a better contrast to the white body.

I'm very happy with the finish but disappointed with the fin decals. As you can see they don't come close to the outline of the fins.

Estes: You need to get your quality control in order I spend so much work on fine details when building rockets, even simple rockets as this one. The decals make 75% or more of the looks.

Nice, Leo. You do some excellent finishes.

I understand your frustration with the decals. I built a s semi-scale rocket where the bands that go round the rocket weren't long enough to go around. Not even close. Evidently it's (that particular kit) been like that for years. Go figure.

I've had nothing but problems lately. I dropped a rocket I was painting last night. Nicked all three fins. I'm so far in the weeds painting, that I'm just going to let it go. That's just the most recent incident.

It's nice to see someone else having some success.

Thanks.

Don't despair. Your bad luck will end at some point. Give it time and be patient.
