Default Camroc History?

What is the history of the Camroc? It seems to spring on the market ready made? Whats with that? There must have been some prototype versions I can model. I plan to write an article on it. Negative diameter is closer to 1 9/16 inch not the easy to find 1 1/2 inch punches.

McMaster-Carr carries the correct size punch. Kurt Schachner and I have punched Camroc film in the past. Not fun swinging a hammer in the pitch black.

Send a PM to Kurt at kurtschachner. He can give you the info needed since he ordered the part.

McMaster-Carr no longer lists that punch in their catalog. However, Osborne does make one and their part number is 01054. This place sells it for about $100:

http://campbell-bosworth.com/

and McM-C should be able to order one for you.

You'll also have to buy some 4x5 sheet film (400 ASA). However...

You will find the sheet film to be EXTREMELY hard to cut and it will dull the punch after only a few good cuts. Like Scott said, it is not easy to hit the punch squarely and accurately in total darkness! Since this is film, not photographic paper, you can't use a safelight.

I tried lots of different ways to try and cut the film and the only way that worked was to place a sheet of copper on the basement floor, then put the film on top of that. Then use the punch to cut the circles.

An arch punch really isn't the correct tool for this job. You need a punch and die instead. But I never could find one that was ready-made, you'd need a machinist to make one for you. Polyester film bases are very tough and very hard to cut. And they dull tools rapidly.

I added plastic to one of my film carriers (oh no, messing with history) and plan on using roll 400 film. Will it work?? Film seems stiff enough. Not a perfect negative each time, but functional.
