Default SpaceX Falcon 9 Landing Oops Video Now Available

SpaceFlightNow! (SFN) now has a loop of the last few seconds of the attempted landing. It's actually rather clear, and you can see the whole stage in the frame as it hits the deck. It's a hard hit, not quite in the center of the target, but close enough it should have stood vertical if the steering issue had not interrupted.

The video is also clear enough to see the RCS activity at the top of the tank.

Impact was off-axis, and the rocket was side-slipping when it touched down, resulting in the CG going out of bounds followed by a quick RUD. There was still fuel in the tank, but you can tell by the relatively small flash and burn that there wasn't very much.

Scroll down on his(CP's) video and read some of the nice comments.

Most of it did...

Looks like the legs "can opener-ed" the rear end of the barge, the engine section impacted on the back edge, and then the rest of the tank structures impacted the deck and blew up, and the empty parts of the tanks flew directly over the side...

Still, despite the outcome, this is an amazing success for the first attempt-- finding a 100x300 foot barge and nearly landing on it (close enough to actually crash into it) in the middle of hundreds of thousands of square miles of ocean-- amazing guidance and navigation success...

Later! OL JR

BTW, did you listen to the impact audio? There's an "unmute" link image in the lower-right corner...

The fact the went public with this video means two things.

* They are so far ahead they can disclose to their competitors.

* They need crowdsourcing parsing of the failure mode(s).

Default Let's try that again!

Today at 6:10 p.m. Eastern Time, Space-X will try to launch again!

Dunno if they can do it. It's a seriously tight window, and they aren't so great at tight windows.

Still, they fixed what they think were the issues with the first attempt to land on the barge (how CRAZY is it that they are trying to land a rocket on a barge in the ocean?). So maybe we have a 51:49 chance this time.

Just in case, I'm gonna run out and grab a bottle of Sake.

Good luck to the Falcon team!

Will there be any live video to watch?

BTW, the ISS will over head at my location at 6:15pm EST. I hope they don't hit each other?

Live streaming coverage at spaceflight.com

I certainly hope there is no collision over your location

If there was, who would report the casualty on the forum?
