Scale entry probes (links)
Hello All,
A new planetary entry probe design that I came across got me thinking--scale models of it and earlier probes could fly like the Centuri, Estes, and Quest flying saucer rockets, which utilized their frustum-like shapes and large area/mass ratios to slowly drift down stably after coasting upward following the cessation of thrust. The planetary atmosphere entry probes are as follows: Along with numerous CubeSat missions to the Moon, planets, and asteroids, a similarly-small planetary atmosphere entry probe called SNAP (Small Next-Generation Atmospheric Probe) is being designed, with its first proposed application being a Uranus mission (all of these missions and spacecraft, including SNAP, are covered here: http://www.lpi.usra.edu/sbag/meetin...ions/Mercer.pdf ). Here are more websites that contain information on SNAP (see: http://www.google.com/search?q=SNAP...0k1.AOP0bVEXG_k ), and: The Pioneer Venus atmospheric probes (particularly the three identical Small Probes, which--unlike the larger Sounder Probe--didn't use parachutes or separate from their conical heat shields, see: http://www.google.com/search?source...0k1.km8m-9XkMpU ) would also make a good scale subject for this type of model rocket. Also: The Jupiter entry probe of the Galileo spacecraft (see: http://www.google.com/search?q=gali...7k1.DdosTv5Nsl8 ), as well as the Deep Space 2 frangible aeroshell/Mars penetrator probes (they could be modeled at 1:1 scale due to their small [11" high x 14" diameter] size, see: http://jpl.nasa.gov/news/press_kits/mplds2hq.pdf ). Here (see: http://www.google.com/search?q=deep...0k1.izs1WcWgPgA ) is more information on the Deep Space 2 probes. I hope this material will be useful.
