Default Seattle Museum of Flight is Hiring (model rocket expertise desired)

Job Description:

Title: Digital Learning Instructor

Reports to: Associate Director of Digital Learning

Compensation: Grade level 5M; Exempt.



Direct Reports: None



General Function

The Digital Learning Instructor designs and delivers educational content and programming to Digital Learning participants in a variety of settings which, at times, requires the supervision, care and well-being of student participants. Primary responsibilities include: partnering with colleagues to develop engaging and relevant STEM-based curriculum; and delivering curriculum and engineering challenge programming to groups of middle and high school students. Programs may be conducted at the Museum of Flight and at locations around Washington State, Oregon and Montana. In the summer, this role will work directly with the Associate Director of Digital and in partnership with the Digital Learning Director and will represent the WAS program and The Museum of Flight, its Vision and Mission with the highest level of professionalism and integrity. The Digital Learning Instructor will also work with other members of the Digital Learning Department and Education Division of The Museum to design programs and curriculum for middle school students in the content areas of space and engineering with particular focus on Zero Robotics and model rocketry.



Qualifications

Education: The ideal candidate will have earned a Bachelor of Science degree in a STEM field or a Bachelor of Arts degree in a STEM content area and will have STEM industry experience.



Experience: A minimum of two (2) years of recent informal or formal education and/or museum work experience in delivering educational programs required. An educational or professional background in a formal or informal learning environment in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) related field is required.



License & Certification: CPR and First Aid Certification. Must have a current Washington State Driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.



Museum Specific Qualifications:

· At time of job offer candidate must be able to pass a criminal background check

· Customer service/client driven focus with a positive, collaborative, solution-based attitude that stays within and upholds Museum’s policies and procedures

· Some onsite attendance is essential to perform the duties of this position

· Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including evening and weekend work.



Knowledge and Skills:

· Related experience with adolescents in an academic setting that includes high school level science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) curriculum

· Availability to travel frequently, and stay multiple nights in specific geographic locations across Washington, Oregon and Montana.

· Experience organizing and implementing programs for teenage students

· Ability to actively interact effectively with up to 40 teenagers (with support from 4 teachers/counselors) and act in-loco-parentis with student participants.

· Ability to work effectively with diverse groups, including staff, students, teachers, parents and volunteers

· Maintain confident, authoritative, and self-directedness

· Excellent leadership skills and the ability to create a high-performance environment that inspires and motivates, fosters collaboration, and encourages open communication

· Diplomacy, energy, innovation, and the ability to anticipate, prioritize and implement educational programs.

· Must have access to reliable transportation; possess a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record

· Ability to drive at least a 15 passenger van




Essential Functions

1. Create and deliver programming and curriculum in STEM-focused areas for students in middle and high school

2. Deliver Digital Learning content to students (small and large groups) in a variety of onsite and outreach settings, including: classrooms, libraries, on-site (at the museum), or other learning settings.

3. Manage student behavior, act as in-loco-parentis at off-site/overnight programs and provide educational and administrative support to participants

4. Manage and maintain supplies and electronic equipment including laptops, iPads and Lego Mindstorms

5. Lead tours for students of engineering facilities and/or other relevant facilities

6. Meet and greet participants upon arrival and answer participant and parent questions

7. Enforce dress code and ID badge compliance

8. Assist and counsel participants and/or parents who have concerns and/or issues

9. Provide transportation to groups of students in a 15 passenger van when needed

10. Other duties as assigned by the Digital Learning Director



Working Condition

The Digital Learning programming falls into two categories, school year programming and summer break programming. During the school year, the Digital Learning Instructor will deliver programming either on site at the Museum of Flight or will travel to schools/organizations across the state to deliver programming to students at their location.



During summer break there will be two (2) non-consecutive six-day summer residency sessions held at The Museum of Flight for high school juniors. It begins in mid-June and runs to mid-July with no programming the week of the 4th of July. The sessions are Sunday through Friday, and hours vary by day. A sample schedule is: Sundays 10:30am-10:00pm, Mondays 4:30pm-9:30pm, Tuesdays 12:00pm-9:30pm, Wednesdays 1:00pm-9:30pm, Thursdays 2:00pm-9:30pm, and Fridays 10:00am-3:30pm



There will also be eight, three day sessions, held in Washington at The Museum of Flight or at partner sites in Everett and Spokane and in Oregon at partner sites in Portland, Salem and Klamath Falls for high school sophomores. The sophomore programs are day camp programs, from 8:00am-6:00pm, but some students may be staying at local hotels due to the distance from their homes. These programs begin mid-July and run to mid-August and require both travel and supervision of students staying at local accommodation without a parent/guardian.



The Digital Learning Instructor will be provided room and board during Summer Experience sessions at which there are students staying without a parent or at locations that are greater than 60 miles from The Museum of Flight with the expectation that they will be available to respond to events that arise at the hotel which require immediate attention or supervision.



Physical Requirements:

· This position is required to lift up to 25 pounds

· This position requires one to stand on one’s feet for up to 8 hours a day

· The ability to focus, bend, carry, reach to the side, front and overhead, push, pull, walk, stand, twist and squat are occasional requirements in a normal office setting

· This position may include overnight travel, or extended out of area stay for longer periods of time, as needed

· This position requires one to be able to travel or extended out of area stay for long periods of time as needed and may be subject to inclement weather, flight delays or other travel related inconveniences.

· This position works in an office and classroom environment, and requires repetitive wrist and arm movement and long periods of sitting
