The next time I write my congressman I think I'll try to incorporate these http://www.noslang.com/dictionary/s/ into my letter so he can better understand my point.

I am just starting to get back into model rockets after a nearly 15 year hiatus, and am also somewhat depressed about recent Estes catalogs. They don't really capture the imagination like the ones I first saw in the 80s. The current products also seem like mostly the same 2 or 3 basic rocket designs with different color schemes and lack the variety of the old days.

That's for sure... with the few golden gem exceptions thanks to John Boren, most of the Estes catalog is retreads of the regular 3FNC rockets in different colors and schemes... Not much interesting or inspiring there... Later! OL JR

Something that bothers me about the new descriptive text:
This is from the online Cosmic Explorer (Centuri Centurion design) "Just another great rocket! What can we say? Only that we employ some of the finest and best rocket designers in the world!" I'm sure Estes employs the finest and best, but - They weren't working for Centuri when that design was first drawn up. And from the Phoenix Bird online copy: "Another great "Classic" returns! This kit was recreated almost in its entireity." I like the wording "almost in it's entirety". They got the foil decals right, but left off the (Eliminator) plastic fin can.

I like my Ebay description of the Baby Ruther better than anything I've seen in the Estes catalogs of late.

I like your PHOTOGRAPHY AND BACKGROUNDS better than anything I've seen in the Estes catalog period... Reminds me of the old NCR catalogs actually... Unfortunately I didn't save a copy of Ted's Texas Tech Cheerleader picture cheering for his turdlofter which was posed in front of them... but I DO have a copy of my favorite NCR girl posing for your perusal... Later! OL JR

I particularly miss the connections and parallels with the space program that the old catalogs made. For example, in the early 1970s Centuri catalogs, the rocket engines section described how they are dangerous to produce and require expensive, specialized equipment operated by highly-skilled & trained people. At the bottom it said (going from memory here) "Even Dr. Wernher von Braun selected a contractor to provide the engines for his rockets. Let Centuri be *your* rocket engine contractor."

Mike Dorffler expressed extreme puzzlement and frustration to me over the reaction here to the Phoenix Bird. He thought, from reading the forums, that we all wanted "all balsa, all the time" and was pretty miffed that we actually complained about the lack of plastic on certain items in the Classics Line.
