Mine was in PLA and finished pretty nice - just not easy.

As a chemist by day, I have access to tetrahydrofuran, which is supposed to soften PLA, like acetone does ABS. Well, it works, but just barely.

What worked best for me was a light touch with a steel file and a lot of sanding. The 'design' sizing appeared to be the bottom of the ridges, so I had to take the shoulder down all the way smooth. I ended up using good old wood filler for the finishing touches on the upper portion. That worked fine.

I was amazed at how the primer made ridges barely discernible quite visible.

If one is not a "chemist" by profession, but needs access to Tetrahydrofuran, purchase 'thin type' PVC cement at any hardware chain. The main ingredient is the aforementioned solvent. It has an acrid reek unlike any other common solvent.

Yes, there is such a thing as NORMAL
, if you have to ask what is "NORMAL" , you probably aren't !

Failure may not be an OPTION, but it is ALWAYS a POSSIBILITY.
ALL systems are GO for MAYHEM, CHAOS, and HAVOC !

I was going to object to the use of quotation marks around the word chemist - but I just checked our org chart, and discovered that my role has been renamed since I last looked. I'm now a 'R&D Scientist 2'.

So quote away.

The Jupiter C body is shorter, which is why Estes used the larger fins.

The real Mercury Redstone had extended tanks compared to the original Redstone missile. IIRC, the Jupiter C was a standard Redstone with tapered warhead removed and cylindrical section in its place to mount the platform that spun up the Seargent stages.

Guys,

Jupiter C also had extended tanks, just not as extended as the Redstone version. See the attached from the NASA website. Or check Peter Alway's Rockets of the World and 14 U.S. Army Missiles of the Cold War.

13.75" for the missile, 17" for Jupiter C and Merc at 19.67" on a 2" diameter body (1/35 scale). Note that if your Jupiter C cone includes a section of cylinder you need to subtract that length from the 17".

Great Mark
Thanks for the measurements and all the advice
guys
Looks like graphics will be easy only marks I see on photos are the black roll pattern, the vertical stripe on the "tub" booster under explorer, black diaganol on top and the UE designator.
