Goblins
I posted some pics of a couple of recently completed Goblins over at TRF:
http://www.rocketryforum.com/showthread.php?t=39690 One is fairly standard while the other features 3x13mm cluster, 'Green Goblin' theme, and parachute recovery. |

Cool! The Goblin was my first D engine rocket as a kid.

And, no doubt, your first D engine rocket to be lost |

You're right. I don't know if you've ever been to my mom's house over on 30th & Grange. We have what we called the "first" field right next to my parents house that I use to launch rockets in. (The "second" field is where Rosen Nissan is now on 27th St. My grandma sold that property awhile back for big $$$. ) Normally I only flew small stuff there, including my Fire Fly, Birdie and The Point. Well, one day my buddy dared me to launch the Goblin in that little field. Of course it took off and floated west over the telephone company never to be seen again.

Ya, I lost a couple too, one at the County Grounds and one at the sod farm. Even with a streamer (which invariably breaks a fin) they still drift a mile if it's at all windy. The one at the County Grounds drifted waaaay over highway 45 and deep into the county buildings, never to be seen again.

I never had a Goblin first time around but always wanted one, so these are my first two. By the time I got into D powered kits, the Goblin was OOP. I'll have to give the 24mm a shot on a D12-7 next time there's not much wind. It would be nice to fly it on a D more than once. The 3x13mm cluster Goblin is my first cluster rocket -- done just for the sake of clustering, and will hopefully be harder to lose. |

I just found my Goblin from ~1974 out at my parents' house. The pessimism here about recovering it made me wonder if I had ever flown it, but examining it, it is clear I have. The tube is a little sooty inside. The streamer is taped in places where it appears to have suffered some burned through holes.
However, back then our house backed up to an undeveloped field. That was ideal. Anytime I had mowed enough lawns to afford rocket engines, it was just a matter of carrying the launch pad out the back door. I still lost several rockets which floated over our house and out into the neighborhood. |

I flew my Goblin last week with the D motor and wow it went high. I lost sight of it until it started coming down. This build was straight out of the vintage package. The tape disk was dry so I glued a new one on the streamer. It did not drift far, but it sure comes down quick. I don't know if that is because the streamer is so long.

Yep, It is the only legal place to launch in San Diego. But still you have to have a permit from the fire department and the parks and rec. department and a note from the President to launch.
