Default Launch cancelled, but we did it anyway

The nearest hobby store is about 15 miles from home, so if I'm going to drive through bad traffic to get there, I'm going to make it worth the effort. I loaded up with about 25 A motors, a bunch of B, C, and D black powder motors, but unfortunately they were out of F motors. We loaded up on snacks and kids and headed to Southern Area Rocketry's Dawsonville launch. As soon as we got there, the launch was cancelled.

So what did we get for 100 miles of driving?? FUN! We found a football field that wasn't being used and put the 13mm motors to good use. Then we jumped into the rest, and even launched some rockets that haven't seen daylight in 2 decades, like the R2-D2 and a Space Shuttle. I even launched a plastic model conversion that I wasn't sure would even clear the launch rod. Boy, did it! Straight up to about 100 feet, and though it landed hard and broke a fin it was a success.

But the biggest success of the day was we now have 2 boys who are obsessed with rockets. During lunch, Eli (age 3) did a countdown before every bite and "flew" the food into his mouth.

I'm thinking about trying one of the R2D2 rockets tomorrow if the winds cooperate. The rain today wasn't bad enough to flood things, so my fingers are crossed.

Are you going to use the R2D2 launch controller?

I don't own one. I didn't end up flying it. The paint wasn't dry enough to unmask it, so I'm working on the decals this week. At least it will look good.

None of the R2-D2 rockets I've built ever flew well. Back around 2000 I bought a slew of the little things and not once did I have a successful recovery. This past weekend was no exception. I still have one kit left, and I'm probably just going to make it a static display.

Are these the little mini engine droids?
