10-14-07 Launch Photos
My son finished his DRM this week so we had to launch a few today. He joined YORF the other night as "Intruder" so if he posts something stupid, hammer him!
I'll start out with a family portrait of my upscale DRM with his new Estes kit DRM. It sure looks naked without the white decals on the nosecone. First in the air was my Superbird to test the wind. Next was my son's CC Express flown on a single B6-4. |

Next up was my Astro-1 clone built with a 13mm mount. The A10-3 is hard to catch off the pad, so I'll have to try a new strategy next time like going with an A3-4T.
My son's Patriot came next. Next was my son's Goblin clone. My pine nosecone gave it some heft and gave it a slow liftoff making it easy to catch in flight. |

The last two flights were the two DRMs. My son's went first.
Then my upscale, flown again today on a C11-3. It's begging for a D12-5...and a bigger field. Bovine Rocket Recovery Services, Inc. (BRRS) |

Man, I think I'm going to set you up with your own sub-forum here so you can teach us how to take pics like that. You take some awesome pics!
For those of you with digital cameras that want to try some of this yourself, you can download the pics to your computer and view the properties of the pics. That way you can see what F-stop is used, the focal length, ISO, shutter priority, etc. He's using a Nikon D80 which is a very nice DSLR camera.

Thanks...but I'm by no means an expert. I just spray and pray and get lucky sometimes. |

So, one of the features you use is the 'rapid shot'? Where you hold down the shutter button and it takes pictures as long as the button is held down? I have that on my Fuji Finepix(2 modes actually, 3 shot burst, and continuous)...
Fabulous pictures none the less May have to look into the Nikon D80...

Yes, but it doesn't work the way it should. Sometimes I will get a good burst, but other times it will shoot one shot and refuse to fire again until I've released the shutter button and pressed again. Therefore, I'm not relying on the burst and I'm trying to time the first image after first movement of the rocket the way I always did with my film SLR (I never had a motor winder). I have a feeling it is at least partly due to the autofocus. There are a few focusing options that I've tried to no avail, but I'm sure there are other options I haven't found yet. If these modern lenses had big focus rings instead of the little dinky ones and good focusing prisms, I'd switch to manual and give that a try. However, I reckon I'm limited to trying other things to get a consistent burst for now. I've already turned off some features that are time consuming such as Noise Reduction. I have a fast SD card, but I'm not filling the buffer, so that shouldn't matter. I'll figure it out one of these days. |
