I got my 1/100 version into the air this weekend - with a lot of wind.
Alas, both Alan and John were unstable. I'm going to have to go back to the 1/35 scale kits and find the CG, then adjust the little guys. I flew at Bong, with the ponds handy. You know you are among [fellow] nerds when your Mercury Redstone model ends up in the water, and they all shout 'Get out of there, Gus!'

Yes, the Redstone did. Came out okay. The motor casing picked up water and was hard, but not impossible, to get out. This was really 'Alan', though - the decals are for MR7.
'Gus' will have to wait for me to build a Saturn 1B and put an Estes E12 in it.

My 1/100 Mercury Atlas missed the Bong pond - but picked up some damage when it hit the gravel road. In particular, it really highlighted just how exposed those trailing fins are.
The fins on the 1/35 2111 kit are really soft balsa, and now I'm worried about them. I was going to leave them plain - but now I have a new idea. I'm going to reinforce all the fillets (including the little bracing pieces) with epoxy putty, try to make a nice smooth surface. And then I'm going to paper the buggers. This will be a little complicated, since I can't get one of the pods back out. But given the dings that they picked up, just riding to Bong and back, I want them stronger.
