Perhaps send Sandman the top 4 "plates" (along with the instructions) from the partial box along with the last one and the bottom of the sheet for his kit (from the full box). Then he'll have all it would take to recreate the whole thing with the aid of his computer.

Indeed! Another thought: If the Centuri Viking (the "general public livery" version of the Akela-1) also had the metallized "spec plate," the Centuri Viking decal (which was water-slide, if memory serves) is simple and would be easy to duplicate to go with the "spec plate."

However, I was right about the water slide decal set not being included (but as Sandman has stated, he's got you covered there).

So, what we have are FOUR full sets of parts for the Akela for the four message posters after MY last message and those four 'winners' are as follows:

* 5 x 7
* frognbuff
* BEC
* A Fish Named Walluym

Thanks Earl, you are very generous. I see if Sandman has the decals and I will try to find time to build it and post it here.

I prefer the BC-730P, but that's just because I'm Centuri Guy. Or as Wallyum says, "*former* Centuri Guy."

But heck, round the tip of the BC-730, and nobody will know the difference.

Cheers,

Earl -

Much Thanks!

I'll move this kit to the top of my build queue and post photos once it's done.

Default Akela-1 Traditional Paint Tip

Just a heads up if you paint the Akela-1 in traditional colors. The magazine ads show a red nose cone, and the body split between blue on top and white on bottom. Fins are white on the top half and blue on the bottom.

Here's the heads up. If you paint the body tube traditionally, splitting in half with the blue, it will look as if you have more blue than white. You will need to mask off a shorter section of body tube for blue to compensate for the optical illusion.

I'll attach a photo to show what I mean. Yes, there is exactly the same amount of blue body tube as white. The separation band is about 1/8" thick and does contribute a tiny bit to it, but as you can see, eyeballs make it seem that there is a lot more blue than white.

This is a clone from an Estes Viking.

Took me a few minutes to find the photo...

Ok, here's the Akela-1 ad from Boy's Life, showing less blue than white. Those aren't Akela decals, so I must assume that Centuri whipped up the rocket with whatever they had on hand and photographed it.

Seems like I have seen them in yellow and blue as well, which I guess are the Cub Scout colors, but not sure.

Default Like Everything.....Variations

Well, I went and grabbed one of the boxes and instruction sheets (each kit mailed will include a full instruction sheet).

The instruction sheet provides a suggested painting scheme and the box art on back shows yet another.

Like many other kits in our vintage 'excursions', there appear to be many variations. But.....be sure to get approval from your Den Mother before finalizing your painting choices.

Too busy to read entire thread, but did anybody post this?:

(Edit) I see that most everything is shown here: http://www.oldrocketplans.com/centu...654/cen1654.pdf

Of course, that is for the single kit. They came in 8 pack boxes and the motors came in an 8 or 12 pack I forget...) of Centuri A8-5.

AND they had QUITE the clearance sale on them in the late 1970's when they dumped them for about $1 per box of 8 kits. Or was it 75 cents?
