Default Electron Beam 'kit'

I picked up an Estes Magnum in the original cardboard range box on Ebay. It included a blue Electron Beam controller as a kit with assembly instructions. Was this a usual thing for Estes at any stage, or is it something that only a few launch sets had?

The Electron Beam controllers had to be assembled. I don't know when they started to come fully assembled.

Interesting... The 1985 Estes catalogue shows Astron Launch, Solar Launch and Power-Pulse launch controllers. The 1986 catalogue adds the Electron Beam controller as a new product and says it is 'Completely pre-wired. No assembly necessary'.
