Estate sale find
Picked up this stuff all in the shown box at an estate sale I stopped by on a lark. Everything dated 1968 and 1969, about5-6 years before I started building rockets. Found it nostalgic and interesting.
Can only upload five pics, so as info, the box also included a box of MPC motors with two motors, instructions and igniters, an Estes motor, a tube of Centuri motors, an Estes flight date sheet, and some other printed materials. Can show pics in another message if anyone is interested. Note: Sealed kit will be available on auction. Last edited by six-o-one : 10-26-2014 at 06:03 PM. |

Good find! I always wonder what kinds of goodies like this are still stuffed in attics and closets. 'Course, most of it eventually finds it way to eBay, but I suspect some just gets pitched when estates are cleaned out.

Earl, I think you are probably right. It probably gets categorized as junk and dumped. The sealed kit and the dated stuff really caught my eye. On the rare occasion I am actually out and about when estate sales are going on I will sometimes stop if I see one. I had one other score a couple of years ago finding some drag racing models, another hobby, but this is the only other time I have hit something.

Earl, it's my opinion that the great majority of vintage rocketry material gets pitched by people who have no idea what they have. So the really rare stuff that you see on Ebay will show up less and less frequently until it's gone.............the last of it held in the collections of folks who had an appreciation for it. joe |

I agree. The day is probably coming not too far distant when these type finds begin to really taper off on ebay as the generation of households that supported rocketeers of the 1960s and early 1970s fades away. Sadly, many on this forum have experienced this themselves whereas there is no 'old homeplace' any longer. At least we have had the ebay 'venue' the past couple of decades to facilitate this market; baring that I am afraid sooo very little of this stuff would have made it from estates to the hands of collectors. It does gladden my heart however to still see the amount of stuff that makes it to ebay, but as we both agree those days are numbered. Earl

Nice find, seeing those shipping labels on the box brought back some great memories.

JohnNGA: Oh yeah, one of the things I loved about it. Nothing more exciting as a kid than getting a package like that in the mail, waiting and waiting for it come. Good times.

It seemed excruciating waiting for an order to arrive back in the day, but once it did arrive (usually to be found sitting on my bed when I came in from school) it was always a magical moment to open that box and find the kit or parts or motors that you had long saved for and anxiously awaited to arrive. Gosh, it brings a smile and a bit of a mist to my eyes these years later to think just how much saving went into something around a $10 order. Seemed like a fortune back then, and now I put over four times that amount in gas in the car every 5-6 days just to get to work and back. Innocent and fun times. Earl
