Default DART asteroid mission (links)

Hello All,

As a test of one asteroid deflection method—kinetic impact—a new NASA/JHU-APL mission, called the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART, see: http://www.sciencealert.com/nasa-is...inkable-happens and http://www.google.com/#q=Double+Ast...edirection+test ), will send an ion drive spacecraft to slam into one component of the binary asteroid Didymos (whose two components orbit around the system’s center of gravity) at a velocity of approximately 6 km (3.7 miles) per second relative to the spacecraft’s target, and:

Didymos was selected as the target because it is a binary asteroid, so that the impact will not significantly alter its orbit around the Sun. The DART spacecraft will impact on the smaller (~160 m [~525 ft.] wide) Didymos B component, which co-orbits with the larger (~780 m [~2,560 ft.] across) Didymos A. This will enable the kinetic impact-induced changes in Didymos B’s co-orbital motion with respect to Didymos A to be determined. This mission will serve as a practice drill for the day—which is not a matter of *if*, but of *when*—a potentially threatening asteroid is found to be on a path that will result in it colliding with the Earth.

We don't need all of that...

Just have Kirok and Miramanee activate that alien obelisk thing to deflect the asteroid...

Later! OL J R

We are taking the first step toward that, by sending a (small) "lodge that moves through the sky" to smite the sky rock...
