Those caps came with Electron Beam controllers for at least some of the time - I guess to protect the bulb in shipping. The black EB's I've acquired early in my six years of BAR-dom all came with those caps - this is post Star Wars branded ones.

I agree about the grooves - I'd wondered how that happened - thanks for the explanation.

Hatter - when I went on my binge of picking up old GSE off of eBay I got two Star Wars starter sets with that R2D2-shaped controller. I'll have to go look at 'em and see.

Default I bought mine from toys-r-us.

Hi all, just wanted to add my story to this thread. The Star wars controller came with the naboo fighter and trade federation drone kits, which were available at Toys-R-Us (Canada, anyways), and they were about $30.00 brand new. They went on clearance for about $10.00, and I stocked up on a few. Like some others said, I gave some out as presents to try and get others into the hobby. I left the hobby briefly in the late 90's and gave what I had to my brother. One of the biggest regrets of my life. All well. My favourite was the trade federation droneship, which actually just clicked onto the rocket body, in parasite/shuttle fashion, whereas the naboo fighter slide down the rocket body. They came with display bases too. There was a Star Wars space station starter kit as well, only seen them at the local hobby shop and I am not sure if they had the star wars controller or not.
