Default pvc leak

Due to the recent freeze, I have a 2 1/2 inch pvc pipe that is leaking . This is part of my pool pump works. I'm thinking I need a pipe clamp around a rubber mat. Anyboby have any experience they could share ?

A piece of old "rubber" hose split and wrapped around the leak with a couple of pipe clamps is a good temporary fix I have used even with copper piping

The only permanent fix that I know of is to cut out the split or broken piece and replace it with a length of new pipe with a coupler on each end. Short of that. Anything else is just temporary and won't hold up to the pressures the pool pump will produce. You'll need some PVC cleaner and PVC Glue.

If you are just looking to get by. The item you have in the picture should suffice.

Just my two cents,

David

Thanks bernomat and astronot. Yes, I was looking for a temporary fix to get past the Christmas crunch and what I suspect might be some inflated pricing from the pool companies around here.

It's been my experience doing things myself, that you pay just as much for a temporary fix as if you would just buying the parts and fixing it yourself.

If you plan on calling a plumber to install the permanent fix...

Well that's a whole other bucket of issues and cost, and you'd be cheaper in the short run to just install the temp. fix yourself.

I've had alot of success with DIY pool maintenance over the years so I'm going to look for a clamp after work today and git 'er done. We have a few more days before the next arctic blast (that's anything close to freezing here). Then I'll see about the replacement pipe and pvc cement.

Agreed. But the key here is employing a pipe union.

Once the broken section is cut out, if one (or both) of the two open ends can be moved - ie, if you've got some slack - then you can simply splice in a new length of pipe using a pair of collars (or couplers). (Where's Bill Spad when we need him? )

Otherwise, if there's little slack, then you use a pipe union. This would replace one of the collars.

When I get to the replacing, I'll have slack on one side only. I'll try to post a picture of the area tonight. That's a pretty slick graphic you whipped up at work Doug.
