Estes Spaceman
This may have been discussed previously, but if it was I missed it. Just wondering if anybody here ever bought/built/flew that model Estes used to make ...it looked like a man (his arms were the fins). How did it fly????

I still have my original K-kit Astron Space Man and even fly it occasionally
Here's a pic of him at a recent CMASS launch. And another with a collection of other kits (you can see him on the far right) At one time I had the whole bridge crew of the Enterprise built out of Astron Space men Now, with FlisKits I offer the Micro to the MAXX Intergalactic Man of Space Great little kit

Many years ago I found one of the paper mache bowling pin thingies in a Michaels clearance bin, and decided that if inverted it would make an acceptable Maxi Spaceman head. The rocket is about 3X original size, and flies on F motors. It was the first of many rockets I built with various NAR members faces on the rocket, this one featuring then NAR Prez J Pat Miller. I know I flew it at NARAM-35.

And of course, there was the infamous "Flying G. Harry Stine" Spaceman made out of posterboard and a styrofoam wig form. It was flown, ONCE, at NARAM-13. I really need to get that film digitized!

Dan Meyer has 8mm film of the 'flight'. The coverage in MRm makes it sound like it had a successful flight. Dan's footage proves otherwise. Bob |

My film shows Harry walking around it on the launch pad, taking pictures of it, then giving it a thumbs up, even though it was listing on the pad badly! At liftoff it made a tight loop (maybe it got to 15 feet altitude!) into the large crowd gathered to the south of it. Then a couple of guys (i guess they already figured it wasn't going to work that well!) brought in a stretcher to carry the "remains" away. I think MRm often sugar-coated launch reports, or maybe they were just practicing print-based sarcasm!

And for those in attendance at NARAM 50, I presented as part of the honor a Vern Spaceman, you can see him in the July/August issue of LAUNCH.
I upscaled three original Spacemen, hired an artist, and the Vern Spaceman came to life. |
