The "why" was that they got a machine that could make 18mm motors (an old MPC/AVI machine)

It wasn't Vern, but the guy who made the "Buzz-Bomb"s, Mr. Brown of Brown Manufacturing Company/Zenith Fireworks, who made the initial order of motors for Model Missiles. Vern just designed Mabel around the size of those Brown/Zenith motors.

Carlisle's 1/2" motors were fireworks tubes as well. But in their initial discussions with Brown (As a fireworks hobbyist, Carlisle knew Brown and they were occasional hunting buddies), Brown suggested the 5/8" tube because he already had a manufacturing line using a similar technique to load propellant into the Buzz-Bombs. The only change would be to drill a hole in one of the end plugs and not into the side! And not attach the little metal wings!!

Those "Buzz Bomb" fireworks used to have a much more powerful report than they do now.
The old ones were equivalent to a real M-80 going off 100' in the air.
Not so good now....

Yes, there is such a thing as NORMAL
, if you have to ask what is "NORMAL" , you probably aren't !

Failure may not be an OPTION, but it is ALWAYS a POSSIBILITY.
ALL systems are GO for MAYHEM, CHAOS, and HAVOC !

Maybe the same problem with substandard charcoal that Estes has!

Speaking of hunting buddies, the owner of Euclid Spiral Paper, Lenny Buckner, was friends with Ron Schultz (later LOC Precision) in hunting and automatic weapon hobbies. Ron sold his business and it has since been sold a second time. He sold his automatic weapon inventory to another dealer to fund the molds for LOC. Lenny recently sold Euclid to Precision tube.

Change is in the air.

I wonder when I will sell U.S. Rockets?

Jerry

The discussions here have gone WAY off-topic. The original message in this thread was posted in the Vendors section, not FreeForAll. That means it is supposed to stay on-topic to Quest Motors. I will delete any further messages posted in this thread dealing with talk of other manufacturers motors, fireworks, tubing suppliers or anything non-Quest motor related.

It's real simple to start a new thread in FreeForAll where all these other non-Quest motor discussions can take place.

To anyone having problems with their Q-Jet motors:

I strongly suggest that you contact Quest customer service and detail your issues. I e-mailed them a couple of days ago asking if they were offering partial refunds. Received an e-mail today from Karl Baumann, VP of R&D at RCS. He detailed the fixes they were doing on the new batch of motors AND OFFERED TO REPLACE MINE WITH THE REVAMPED ONES WHEN AVAILABLE.
Now, that's what I call great customer service. I will definitely be ordering their C and D motors when they become available. Keep on rock(ateer)in'.

I'm really looking forward to the release of the C and D motors.
It will be nice to have some more 18mm choices with real kick off the pad.
Those will be great in the Mars Lander and 1284 Space Shuttle and any other draggy 18mm rockets.
A 4xD cluster in a K-29 Saturn 1B would be cool and so would a 3xC cluster in an Astron Cobra, Scrambler, or Ranger.

Yes, if the D's can start quickly and reliably in clusters, an Estes or Semroc Saturn IB would be nice. I'd still prefer an actual flame or plasma exhaust vs the black smoke, but if that's what they gotta do to make ignition reliable, so be it.
