I'd use an Aerotech D24 or D21.

, if you have to ask what is "NORMAL" , you probably aren't !

Failure may not be an OPTION, but it is ALWAYS a POSSIBILITY.
ALL systems are GO for MAYHEM, CHAOS, and HAVOC !

Will try a longer rod or micro rail buttons and a Makerbeam rail next time with a Q-Jet D. The thing about the AT 18mm composites is, my experience is that they get very hot. It might melt the plastic, even with the motor tube insulating it.

I flew a Q-Jet C12 at NARAM that Gary Rosenfield gave me. I put it into this “no-name” rocket that had a molded plastic fin unit, with plastic retainer, the kind that has two locking tabs. The motor was slightly recessed from the bottom. There was not only no soot on the retainer cap, but no signs of distress from heat, either on the cap, or the fin unit innards.

This sounds promising. Sounds like we may have motors to work with. The recovering device is the next problem to solve but that's true no matter plastic or paper tubing rockets. Thanks for the input LeeR.

Mr. Mole,

Glad to provide any insight I can, but, realistically, in the next 6 months, I’ll be challenged to get my Saturn V completed prior to the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 moon landing in July. I am not sure I’ll have time to work more on the Vostok. I guess I can take advantage of your experience getting the Vostok flying successfully, and maybe others will be motivated to build one.

I have an Estes Saturn 1B that is built, but needs painting. And I also have the Estes 1/100 Little Joe II kit. I’d love to have all those done. Probably wishful thinking. And my wife wants to move closer to kids and grandkids, so now we are prepping our home for sale, and looking at property to build. On a positive note, we looked at some new homes recently, and one had a 2300 sq. ft. basement, with tall 9’ ceilings. My current basement woodshop and rocket room is about 800 sq. ft.!

I really like the C12 Q-Jets - and they cluster well too. Flew a mega-mosquito on 4 last weekend, using the stock starters and a 12V system, all lit, and the smoke trail was fun to see. Next I'll try 7.
