Estes Red Nova #7266
Just opened my Estes Red Nova Kit #7266 and measured it to create a Rocksim file (see attached). When viewing the flight profile of the simulation(s) the rocket tumbles although the stability margin is around 2.1 calibers. I also get an optimal delay with a D12-3 not a D12-5 or a D12-7 as recommended by Estes. Anyone notice any unstable flights or late delay issues when they flew this design?

My Red Nova is a stock build and is very stable. I use a D12-5. I think it would fly thru the chute on a D12-3.

I've flown my Red Nova on a C11-3 motor.
Good Flight!

I can't help but think that this design is crying out for a two-stage mod. I doubt there's enough fin area to compensate for 2x 24mm motors, but maybe 24mm to 18mm could be achievable? Either way, there's one in my wishlist at eRockets.

But keep in mind, with the cut line just below the red fins, the booster will be stable and come in ballistic - the forward end will take a pounding. With some hacking, such as having the booster motor sticking way out in back, and the separation line moved farther aft, you might get the booster to tumble, and not tear itself up. That said, the fins are sort of small, so, even tumbling, the booster may still come in pretty fast and hit hard. Doug .

Jim Pommert has done the two-stage mod. I may be misremembering, but I think he has some kind of streamer arrangement in the booster.

My Estes Red Nova flew and sraight on a D12-5 in 10mph winds! Recovered right at the edge of the field, no damage!

See? I told you ... D12-5 is just right.
