Bob....
Those kits look great !
Would you happen to have an un-opened (or opened) Enerjet Athena ?
I haven't seen one of those for many years.

The auction still has over 8 days left and the kit is now over $760.00 !!!

(How did I miss this one )

Sorry, I don't have an Athena.

However, back in the Spring of 1987, I DID get to look at an Athena that was still in the box.

I had just started working for AeroTech and the Production Manager at the shop was a fellow named Jim Dunlap.

Jim had built and flown a LARGE Orbital Transport upscale at one of the early LDRS meets.

AeroTech was going to introduce the 98mm motor line at the upcoming LDRS and needed to have a 'special' rocket to demo the new M2000 (??) motor.

Jim said he would build an upscale Enerjet Athena for the demo. He knew Chuck Mund (A familiar name for early members of Tripoli) who had an unbuilt Athena kit. Chuck sent the kit to Jim. Jim had Ron Shultz of LOC/Precision make custom nose cones and a transition for the upscale.

What an upscale!

Main body tube was 5.5" diameter, payload tube was the new LOC 7.6" tube.

The pods held 54mm smoke charges.

It was 9-10 feet tall!

Jim finished building it just before leaving to LDRS that year. Sadly, the phenolic casing split at motor ignition and the rocket burned on the pad at LDRS. Pictures were printed in an issue of Tripolitan.

I do not have any finished pictures of Jim's Athena. However, I have attatched a picture of all the components assembled for a 'mock up'. The gentleman standing next to the model is Chuck Mund who is around six feet tall.

Now that's an ATHENA !!!!!!
If I built one this size and it burned before it flew, I would HAVE to either make another one or rebuild the burned carcass.

Bob,

cool photo, and thanks for the memories.

I was there at LDRS 6, Colorado when this baby burnt on the pad ... will see if I can get scans of my pics, definately have photos of it burning, not sure if I have a nice 'mint / display' pic.

like the pic with Chuck and the unpainted bird, Chuck was actually a HUGE influence on my high power adiction, and helped me out a bit during my contest days,etc... seeing him along with Scott Pearce, and Warren Sisco fly high power (NAR legal) demos at early 80's Wubba launches got me hooked for life....

flights that will forever live on in my ind include Scott's Citation Patriot on one of the first Aerotech F10's... that was out of sight with half the burn left, we just heard it going on forever... and Chuck's ACE Legal Allegro one 3 x E6's... same effect, and we later found it while looking for one of our B/g's.. an honor to return it to him for sure.

have not seen Chuck in a while, but was told he still flys sporadically with the metra guysin NY.not sure what ever happened to Scott / Jim though ...

( and I also had the distinct pleasure of seeing Jim's 4" Orbital Transport at , iirc, the Z2 or Z3 launch ...... )

Jim moved to Florida after his time at AeroTech. He married and is a pilot for an airline.

Scott was the Production Manager during my second go 'round with AeroTech. He and I shared an apartment in Las Vegas for about four years. We built and flew alot of rockets! We even competed as a team in NAR contests. He's back in PA, last I heard.

For you Enerjet fans...

In the May/June issue of Sport Rocketry, Editor Tom Beach talks briefly about being inspired to build a clone of the Enerjet Athena after seeing the NARAM-48 patch design.

I e-mailed Tom and he told me that the Athena is done and he's looking forward to bringing it to NARAM this summer.

Wow! This could be an 'Enerjet NARAM'! There haven't been this many Enerjet models at a NARAM since the mid-1970s.

I need to get back to work on my 1340 clones...

I currently have 2 built Enerjet Athena Clones via Semroc parts and have put together a "kit" for another one without the wraps.
Unfortunately I cannot make it to NARAM
