Yep, Katie is Emma's teammate on the Junior S1 altitude and I know she's been out practicing a lot lately. Ryan and I have been working closely on the models and have received huge help from Trip.

For folks who aren't familiar with the FAI altitude rules, total model length must be at least 500mm. Half that length must be at least 40mm in diameter (Big Bertha sized). If a second stage is used, it must be at least 18mm in diameter for 75% of its length. Booster must have at least as much impulse as the sustainer. Booster and sustainer must each have their own recovery systems (streamers). Altitude will be determined by an altimeter which may be no wider than 10.5mm, no longer than 50mm, and which weighs no more than 8 grams. Altimeters for each contest are provided by the contest group and in this case come from Poland and weigh 2.4 grams with battery.

Real design challenge of this contest is how to ignite the sustainer motor 10 inches from the booster. You can either use a fuse arrangement or gap stage the booster (electronics are too heavy). I think all of us this year on the U.S. team are gap staging. Second major design challenge is how to deploy a streamer from a booster stage. Third challenge is to develop all this for motors that are not available in the U.S. Final challenge is how to get these models to the contest field in Serbia without destroying them.

VERY complex, but lots of fun.
