John! Chill, man. I'm not dissing the field, just trying to be realistic. And keep on them about the permission. We need to keep with the STEM angle, the "no injuries compared to sports" angle, and the "fewer fires than cigarette butt-flippers" angle. We also somehow need to show them what the demand is for rocket flying. Not sure yet how to do that; maybe a comment section on the "where do I fly my rocket" article on the website to gather comments.

We have two people working on fields even farther out (Jasper, and such); one, a cow pasture (ugh!).
Hmmm...although it is, strictly speaking, outside the scope of the club's (and John's) desire, having golf carts at that and other "long walk" parks would have broad-based public appeal (especially among the elderly [who vote!] and the disabled, including veterans...). Even used "Amigo" electric carts from grocery stores would be useful at the parks, including for rocket flyers, and that particular logo--which no one younger than a certain age would recognize--*would* look snazzy on them and/or on golf carts (and calling each other by various numbers would puzzle the younger folks even more :-) ).

It's actually a nice little park. A bit wider than our normal field, but only about 1/3 as long (our normal field is something like four times as long as it is wide). This field is basically square. Both are surrounded by tall trees. The big field has some tall grass, and a cluster of short trees, but would still allow "G" motor flights.

As a kid, I flew from a much smaller field (our pasture), complete with mounds of "early-state compost", bordered by the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, tall trees, power lines, and a corn field (good luck finding a rocket in a corn field). I learned to fly using smaller motors and I learned to read the wind - and I had a great time. When I moved to California, I flew with LUNAR and BayNAR. Lunar was nice, they had a soccer field at the time - with rockets hanging from the field lights and power lines. BayNar launched from a paved parking lot at a community college. It was small, surrounded by trees, and had lights, power lines, and tree islands throughout the "field".

Our club actually had a contest at a field that was even smaller! We had a pretty darn good time. I think we lost two rockets all day. It was the same Parks people, and they never responded to our requests to use the field again.

Basically, the Parks people seem reluctant to provide any written permission to fly at this park, which I would go after with daily calls and e-mails ... if the response of the club had not been rather tepid. I have flown rockets and had a lot of fun in much worse fields than the two I looked at recently. I think it's a case of "Perfection being the enemy of Good Enough" on the club's side, and the realization on the Parks side that they can't make money from model rockets like they can with sports that injure children.

Your mentioning the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses made we wonder:

If a model rocket club approached Parks & Rec people (in any community) about using a park, and they also happened to be Muslims, members of a local mosque--and made those things known to said Parks & Rec people, either overtly or incidentally--I can't help but feel that they would get a faster, and positive, response to their request...

The concept of "Good Enuff/Ity'll Doo" needs to be not only considered NORMAL/EXPECTED, it should also be EMBRACED.
Unless one is willing to PAYYYYYYY/work for perfection/the best, one has NO right to expect it.

Average/Mediocrity gets a far too bad a name nowadays In everything from flying fields to appliances to automobiles to water/air quality.
AVERAGE/MEDIOCRE should be considered NORMAL And EXPECTED.
Expectations higher than that without comeasurate PAYMENT are A$ININE.

*Nods* Even G. Harry Stine willingly conceded this when he included his plan view drawing of an idealized model rocket range in his "Handbook of Model Rocketry." In the text he wrote (on page 289 of the Sixth Edition, published in 1994):

"The layout of an idealized model rocket range is shown in Figure 18-1. Note that I emphasized the word idealized. Someday I'd like to fly on such an ideal rocket range. I've been on some very good model rocket ranges, but every location is somewhat less than ideal. We do have a good one in the Phoenix, Arizona area where we have the use of a square mile of state land."
