If you get your hands on some old ones, you may find them rotted.

Nice thing about building rockets with fishing swivels, you can easily remove and replace the parachute/shock cord/nose cone. But if the thing comes down w/o a parachute, you're hosed.

I'll gladly use a modern one for flights if I don't find one that's in good shape.

Yeah, I HAD one of those from an "ancient" kit I got *somewhere* back in the 80's... (can't even recall the kit now, but I remember the parachute... even then it was kinda fragile... the plastic back then wasn't as tough as it is now... and they were pretty thin... modern chutes seem quite a bit thicker than those were (IIRC)...

I flew it a few times in the rocket in question and moved on to other rockets... then all that stuff got sent to the attic while I was in mechanic's school and a decade or so thereafter... when I retrieved my rocket stuff from the attic years later, that chute basically turned to shredded bits in my hands when I touched it...

Ok,

I'm getting an image here that the 1970's chutes are not to be trusted with anything other than helping date an old kit found in the attic. It shouldn't be used for anything other than that.

I'm sold, I'll see if I can get my hands on one of the new Estes Retro looking ones... Oh, the 18" one is purple and white. I'm looking for red and white, red and black, or red and yellow (checkerboard). Semroc's 16" or 20". Decisions, Decisions...

In looking at Earl's photos of his kit being unboxed, I can see that it has one of the red and black ones with the big 'ole Estes logo in the center. I still have quite a few of those, and at last examination (last July when they went into the attic) they looked ok.

I can now see in that image a clearly that there is only one white Logo/cineroc decal. Sorry for all the grief Gord (I'm not as obsessed on any other rocket, and I'll pick up some more when I can).

The two Checker Broad , ( Orange & Black, Red & Yellow) Chute's that you show here are from
in the 60's - 1972. Late in 1972 Estes started packaging the Orange and White Panel with the
Black Circle / Estes Logo in the Center, later versions in Red & White, Yellow & White, Green & White, in four different sizes.

The Biggest problem with the old chute's is that even if they look like new, they are probably
stuck together and the ink will pull off when you try to unfold them.
If you get one and it is stuck together, try this : unfold it under warm water and use just a little
dish soap but go slow. then dry and powder.

I have an old orange and black checkerboard I've been flying in my 1972 Trident since I built it in 1973.
It's held up nicely with none of the fragility issues brought forth here. Probably because one does not need wadding in the Trident; I leave the 'chute in the rocket until I'm ready to launch, whereupon I take it out, powder, and fold.
It has worked flawlessly for at least 40 flights, perhaps more!
Also, my rockets never got stored in an attic (thank goodness).
