I have about as much use for snakes as a Bowlin' Ball in a Swimmin' Pool or a TURD in a Punch Bowl.
The same rule as applied for bugs; " a GOOD bug is a DEAD bug". Replace "bug" with "snake". Agree with the Terrier plan. ANY Terrier, be it Fox, wire haired, Scottish, Jack Russell, English, Airedale, or Boston, is a GREAT Rodent/Vermin/Varmint KILLER.

Interesting. We actually did have a Terrier (hybrid Fox) in our family until he passed away recently; and now that you mention it the place did seem a bit less overrun with the wee vermin while he was around. When I came down into the basement today, who should I see beside my rocket stuff but a little black house mouse. Call me paranoid, but it was almost like he was taunting me! So yeah, the cats are useless, a terrier would be nice, and although my wife and son might not be too impressed I wonder how an eastern massasauga rattlesnake would fare around here? Thanks for all your input guys!

When I was a kid, the farmer next door dealt with rattlesnakes one of two ways...12 or 20 gauge.... whichever was handier at the time.
The 20 was more than plenty.

My Jack got a snake in the garage while I was working. A JR's kill method is the bite and shake. I didn't find that snakes head until 3 months later.

Most Terriers use the bite and shake method. That's what our Boston Terrier Lucy does. My brother's Boxer does that with varmints up to the size full-grown woodchucks.
He decapitates them via brutal shaking....for real.

On a smaller scale, when I clean the garage, if I take out all the spider webs in the corners, then I'll start seeing a big increase in rollie pollies and other bugs until the spiders re-establish themselves. So, as long as I'm not finding them in my bed, I'm inclined to prefer snakes over rats and other vermin Doug .

I never kill snakes, and only kill brown recluses and black widows in the house/shop because I don't want the wife or kids to get bitten. All other spiders are golden for myself and my daughter, but the wife kills all she sees. If spiders are there, then annoying bugs are there in droves, even if we don't see them. Spiders won't stay where there isn't a a food source. Same for snakes. I've got water snakes living in the creek in front of the house right now. I wish they'd get out on land and kill moles. Other snakes don't hang around long enough to keep the population down. In the past our dogs tore up way too much lawn for too limited productivity.
