Nose Cone Balsa Tip
Decided to experiment on doing my own NC with my drill press. This is not the best tool to make custom NCs but if one is not a perfectionist, a decent NC can be turned. Doing so reminded me of my junior high school days while taking the "Industrial Arts" class where we learned to use drills, hammers, saws, and other hand held and electric tools... In so I enlisted the help of my daughter, who we home school. Gave her the required safety briefing, gave her safety goggles, a large nail filer (the wife gave it up) and sanding she did go!... after about 45 minutes we ended up with a decent facsimile of the Orion NC. I finished it up a little and did the shoulder. She was proud of her work... and so was her father!
After this experience I have decided to have the NCs for the pods done by someone else. Hard to make a good NC when one does not have access to a lathe. EDIT: Forgot to post a close up of the NC.

Work continues...
Wow, 20 days since my last post on this thread... time for an update.
Braided three 6' long strings of 100 lbs kevlar. Tied it at the internal BT under the tip CR and glued it with epoxy. Underneath the kevlar there are strips of carbon fiber to reinforce the thick paper CR. Afterwards installed two 10mm or small rail buttons. Once the epoxy was cured on the kevlar and buttons I assembled the main BT and the internal BT. Modified one of the Saturn V wraps: I removed the section with the ullage motors. Played with the locations of the wraps for a while until I found what I liked. The bottom wrap is at the upscale distance as well as the top portion of the middle wrap. The top wrap was a leftover and I though it would look good there. I also added the wiring and helium tunnels... gotta use as much from the kit as I can. I also plan to reproduce some of the details the original Orion had on the wraps, but making them so that the size of these details match the size of the ones already on the wraps. Other details may include hatches and other hook points. This baby is going to be over a pound once I am finished, so, I decided to go 29mm. I am waiting for the hardware to arrive this week to install the MM. Also acquired a 30" nylon parachute for the recovery. What is missing are the NCs for the pods. Played with the idea of making them myself but some friends persuaded me to buy them. Got them from eRockets and, even when they are not to scale, they are close. They should arrive this week also. ... and while waiting for some parts to dry or cure, I finished my Semroc Goblin with Estes Decals, and put together a metal model of the NCC-1701 USS Enterprise.

It has been a while so it is time for an update. I managed to finish the rocket before ECRM 44, which happened on Father's day. Flew on an EconoJet F42-4T. Recovery was on a 30" nylon round red parachute. Here are some pictures of the finished rocket before and after it flew.

Good news, not so good news...
The good news is that it flew great, perfect take off and flight trajectory. I placed an altimeter in one of the pods and the rocket reached an altitude of 265'. The not so good news is that everything was going well until it reached apogee and the recovery system deployed... the parachute got tangled on one of the pods and did not open... it bounced on the ground. After watching the video HERE I think the problem was that the shock cord was too short. Will have to double the length for the next flight, which will be with a "G" motor as I want it to go higher. The damage looks like a lot but it can be fixed. I will repair it and get it ready for next year's ECRM.

Didn't realize the scale of the thing until I saw the picture of you posing by it at the launch pad!
