Vintage Estes Shrike build
I will begin my next project today, looks like a straight forward build. This is an old kit but all the parts are usable minus the tape disk and rubber shock cord. The directions show 2 foam disks and my kit did not come those. Nothing like the smell of old paper, cardboard and balsa wood when opening a kit.

Those foam pads commonly disintegrated as they aged.

+1 to what Scott said about those foam pads.
I'd bet you found some odd "black dust" in the bottom of the kit bag when emptied. Those WERE the foam pads up until probably about 1985. Always liked the Shrike but never built one. Wish someone would clone this kit complete with correct wraps and decals.

I just recently completed my clone. I didn't want to fool with finding clone foam pad material, so I cut the transition and nosecone shoulders to stick out about 1/8". I painted them with a black Sharpie straight over the balsa, making it look like a nice flat black foam pad. In comparing it with the catalog photo, I think it worked like a charm.

I did notice the crumbled up black stuff in the bag, almost looks like used rocket engine dust.

Also, FWIW, I notice the 1" long NB-50 noseblock is supposed to be mounted only 3/8" into the payload section. Seems like that's a bit on the short side for keeping everything aligned on axis. I'd prefer a length 1.5 to 2" long overall. Doug .

That's my guess, cushioning for the payload. If Mike Dorffler finds the time to answer questions again that would be an excellent one for him. I also want to ask him about the old TranRocs. I see Danny is selling a bunch on eBay.

Mine didn't come with the foam pads either, but then mine came built without a payload section or bulkhead.
