Both sustainers lost despite clear blue sky. Damage to booster in one case.

Long ago, I did a ground test of a 29mm Estes BP motor to check the ejection force in a minimum diameter airframe (29mm LOC motor tubing). It blew the Apogee Rockets 29mm fiberglass nose cone (no longer made) off like a shotgun blast with such force that it tore out the Kevlar line shock cord anchor epoxied to the inside of the body tube and the nose cone went flying some distance trailing its streamer. I suspect that this might be the reason Estes made the So Long so long - to increase the volume to be filled by the gasses from the shotgun blast of the motor's ejection charge. The ejection charge blast alone or perhaps that combined with a possible high velocity deployment with the F15-0/F15-8 combination both of these (former) So Long owners used may have resulted in recovery system separation leading to the loss of the rockets.

There's a sad sort of beeping
From the launch controller at the pad And the altimeter in the nose too, And up in the display rack an absurd little rocket Is popping out to say "launch me too". Regretfully they tell us, But firmly they compel us To say “launch me” to you. So long, farewell, Auf wiedersehen, good night, I hate to go and leave this pretty launch site. So long, farewell, Auf wiedersehen, adieu, Adieu, adieu, to yieu and yieu and yieu. So long, farewell, Au'voir, auf wiedersehen, I'd like to stay at my first launch campaign So long, farewell, Auf wiedersehen, goodbye, I leave and heave a sigh and say goodbye, Good bye I'm glad to go, I cannot tell a lie. I flit, I float, I fleetly flee, I fly. The sun has gone high in the sky and so must I So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, goodbye, Goodbye, Goodbye, Goodbye! |

Pretty obviously not flying the field, and then posting it on Youtube. Wonderful.

I WAS going to make a very long, 29mm two stage rocket like the So Long with two pods on the E16-0 powered booster containng C11s and an F15-8 in the sustainer, the ejection charges on the C11s providing parachute recovery of the booster and the total mass of propellant being 124 grams, one gram under the Class 1 limit of 125 grams and have already cut the 29mm LOC motor tubing I was going to use.
However, as I said above, the loss of both of their sustainers may indicate that even with a LONG body tube the shotgun effect of the powerful ejection charge I also mentioned above from a test I did long ago may still be too much even with the greater internal volume of the very long body tube. That's why I'm waiting for some So Long success stories.

Or just fly composites and adjust the charge as needed.
