Default Honest John maxibrute motor mount

Hello gang!
I'm finally starting this build and have a quick question: would you recommend upgrading to a 29mm and if so, is it easy to do? Also, I have found a few ideas to increase fin strength so I'm covered there. I've only built kits from stock and the last time I flew a rocket was 1991! Thanks in advance guys! Take care, Jeff

If you still want to fly with Estes D12-3's, I'd stick with the 24mm mount. With that mount you can still upgrade to APCP 24mm E motors, giving decent altitudes but still within visible range.

If you go to more powerful 29mm, you'd have to start looking into reinforcing fins, possibly nose weight, heavier recovery systems, etc. which will take away the ability to fly it on D12's.

IOT, it's just up to you based on where and how you plan to fly.

Thank you VERY much, Zep. I think I'll just keep it simple and take advantage of those E motors you mentioned. Take care, Jeff

Estes is coming out with an E12 motor that should make larger models practical.

Decades ago, yes I can count, I used the available FSI conversion kit for flying the Estes Maxi Honest John with their 29mm BP motors. I actually flew the HJ with the then available AVI Gold Series E11.8-4 motors. They were hit and miss, but the ones I flew worked as advertised. Thus was in the late '70s. Slow forward, the model met its demise at the Bonneville Salt Flats when I worked for North Coast Rocketry '73-'74. Flew it on a prototype E20 motor. Up was good. No ejection and that darn salt is really hard.

Have a couple of original kits and one of the rereleased.

That was my first thought, too. But after reading Tim's post, I changed my mind. You can fly this up to baby F power using composite motors (29/40 case), without worrying about stability. But with a 29mm mount, now you're opening a whole can of worms of changes.

I typically make those upgrades along with the MMT (shock cord, light glass around the tube opening, nylon chute, etc), but for jspitza just getting back in the hobby, maybe stock's the better choice for now.

Doug...disagreeing in a gentlemanly way...

I agree that they will turn in a pretty decent flight on a 24mm F24 or F32/35

Thanks guys:
I'm printing this thread out for future refrence. BUT I'll be sticking to the stock build as I'm not into the idea of pimping out my HOJO. I'm just glad to know that you threw in motor ideas. Right now she is being primed in my paintbooth of death and will post pics when she's done. Take care, Jeff
