Centuri Saturn 1B body tube
Hello,
I'm new to the group, but built and launched a lot of Estes rockets back in the mid-1980s. I've taken it back up and over the past couple months built a few, including a #2001 Saturn V, a #1284 Space Shuttle, and a Dr. Zooch Falcon Heavy. I recently purchased an old Centuri 1/100 scale Saturn 1B kit (#SA-205) off eBay. Everything seems to be here, but the largest body tube has been crushed. I've done some measurements and searched online, and it looks like the Estes version of this tube is: BT-82A 2.618” OD x 7.635” long The ID of mine is 65.6mm or 2.58" The OD of mine is 66.5mm or 2.618" Do you think a standard BT-80 (2.560" ID / 2.600" OD) is close enough to work with my other existing parts? Or do you know of anybody making this exact tube? Or would I perhaps be better off attempting to repair the one I have? thanks, luther |

I just checked Semroc/eRockets for a BT-82.
They don't offer it, which is surprising. The BT-80 'on paper' looks to be close enough, but someone else would have to confirm.

The Centuri Saturn 1B, and the subsequent rerelease by Estes (#2048) used Centuri sized body tubes. The main tube should be the eRockets sized ST-27.

Specs for the ST-27 do not match the OP's specs: ST-27 ID 2.674" OD 2.700" I'm thinking this might have been a specialty tube just for these kits. |

The BT-80 is close. U.S. rockets has a 2.60 x 2.70" tube as well. I am selling Semroc/eRockets saturn 1B's right now for $129.95 + $12 ship in case that is an option. Ever since I have been selling these discontinued produces I have heard numerous stories of people buying them from OOP rocketeers and collectors for less. At NARAM one was sold opened and started for only $65.

So I got my Centuri Saturn 1B out of storage and here is what the instructions say:
2nd stage body tube - 2-5/8" dia. x 7-9/16" long Aft body tube - 2-11/16" dia. x 1-13/32" long Aft body tube spacer ring - 2-5/8" dia. x 1/4" long Nozzle spacer tube - 2" dia. x 1" long 1st stage fuel tubes - 11/16" dia. x 8" long 1st stage exhaust tube - 1-3/16" dia. x 8.-1/2" long LEM-SM tube - no dimensions stated And thanks Jerry for providing us sales info on the Estes/Semroc K-29, which has nothing to do with what we are discussing. We are discussing the Estes #2048/Centuri KS-10 1/100 Saturn 1B. Please stay on topic.

That may be sized for the engine skirt ring, not the S-IVB. The BT-80 may be "good enough" for that.

Thanks for all the replies so far. And it makes me happy to know that my first question here is one that isn't straightforward to answer

Since the BT-82 tube is not currently available your best shot is to try and see if a BT-80 will work. At worst, you'll have an extra body tube for scratch building. Good thing that's the only tube damaged. In looking at John Boren's list of parts, they all are odd sizes/specialty tubes: BT-82, BT-58, BT-54, BT-83, BT-67, BT-18.
Guess the goal was an accurate 1/100 scale representation. Good luck. P.S. How badly crushed is the tube? pics? |

I think you'll find that we can make even the most straightforward question an adventure.
