When I went to the WSMC in Baikonur, the team from Uzbekistan were using a cranked generator to launch thier rockets. We asked about it and it was repurposed from a mining explosives detonator. I don't remember them having a misfire the whole week.

The duty cycle on a launch system is so low it makes perfect sense. We should look into more "explosives" technology now that we are totally NOT explosives as ruled by a Federal judge. Don't be shy.

So you are saying you have balls and use them and share them?

And mis-spell it?

Thank you for passing that information along. Did they start cranking it at the call of "START!", or did they crank it before then and close an ignition switch at "START!" while it was turning? A magneto-powered launch controller might make an interesting NARAM R & D project entry.

They would crank at the end of the countdown. You get about 5 seconds after that to launch, or the RSOs make a "not ready" call and move to the next person in the queue. If you go before the end of the countdown, you are DQ'd.

Interesting...even without an ignition button (and even a safety key would be superfluous if the magneto wasn't turning), that set-up is perfectly usable even for the more strict contest environment, so it would be more than adequate for sport flying use.

Every now and then the old DuPont "Blasting Machines" that look like one of those "Wile E Coyote" Acme deals show up on ebay....they usually go for over $200 though....several good ones on ebay now. One is a 6-D cell capacitive discharge model.

ALL systems are GO for MAYHEM, CHAOS, and HAVOC !

Thank you for posting that link. Yes, something like that (a magneto with a set of capacitors, which could optionally be discharged so that their output along with the magneto's would provide more "oomph!" for, say, firing clustered igniters) would make a great all-purpose, battery-free launch controller.

The provided link has one that requires 6 D-cell batteries, it does not have a magneto. The batteries charge capacitors which then in turn provide a high current 'dump' to launch a rocket or whatever other purpose.

I know--I was referring to a similar capacitive discharge system that would utilize a magneto instead of batteries, although there's nothing wrong with using a battery-powered unit like the one listed on eBay. A purpose-designed (for model rocketry) system might even include a solar panel to recharge the internal batteries, instead of a magneto. There have even been purely solar-powered systems that charged capacitors (Stuart Lodge included a schematic of one in one of his books).
