Default GQM-163A Coyote target missile

Hello All,

Below are illustrations of--and links to more illustrations of (and information on)--a new vehicle that would make a good (and unusual) scale model rocket. Orbital Sciences Corporation's GQM-163A Coyote is a sea-skimming supersonic target that is powered by a solid fuel ducted rocket/ramjet motor. Designed to simulate sea-skimming supersonic anti-ship missiles, the Coyote typically cruises at Mach 2.5 at an altitude of only about 15 feet above the sea surface. Its maximum speed is Mach 2.8. The vehicle is boosted to ducted rocket/ramjet ignition velocity by a solid propellant rocket booster from the Mark 70 Standard Missile.

A flying scale model of the Coyote could also utilize a ducted rocket system to augment the thrust of the model rocket (or HPR) rocket motor in its motor mount. Although the full-scale Coyote is designed for horizontal flight, its rocket-like configuration (with four fins [plus four rear winglets on later versions] and four ramjet air intake scoops located at the rear of the target) would make a scale model of the Coyote very stable in standard vertical and near-vertical model rocket (or HPR) ascents. Shire,

Look through the BARCLONE pages, this design has been worked up in RockSim and should fly well. Looking back through my files, it was four full years ago in July...

That booster looks remarkably like a standard "Nike" booster used in the Nike-Smoke, Nike-Ajax, and clustered in the Nike-Hercules.

Yes, there is such a thing as NORMAL
, if you have to ask what is "NORMAL" , you probably aren't !

Failure may not be an OPTION, but it is ALWAYS a POSSIBILITY.
ALL systems are GO for MAYHEM, CHAOS, and HAVOC !

Army booster on a Navy missile?

Its a Terrier booster (aka Standard missile).
Note the distinctive interstage.

Yep--the Terrier-boosted Black Brant 9 vehicle (http://www.astronautix.com/lvs/blabrant.htm and http://www.bristol.ca/PopRockets.html ) that I saw on an enclosed launcher at Poker Flat had that distinctive "wasp-waisted" interstage section, along with two "crescent moon"-shaped drag plates to facilitate quick separation of the Terrier booster after burnout.
