I.E. Spam....well that says it all right there.

Indeed--the distinctions between foods are often less distinct than most folks care to contemplate.

It is to/in Hawaii what fried clams are to/in New England (especially Massachusetts), a local favorite that is sold by vendor stands and restaurants everywhere within its locale. Spam Musubi presses are even sold in stores in Hawaii. Also:

I'm genuinely curious--how did your mother cook the spam? While it can be cooked in a pan without adding any oil (it contains its own), if the temperature is too high (or if it's left too long before flipping it over), spam can be over-done (not burned, but too well-cooked), at which point it *doesn't* have a pleasing scent or flavor. For making an omelette containing spam, putting a little oil in the frying pan first ensures that this won't happen to the spam (plus it serves to sautee the chopped onion and bell pepper before the eggs are added).

Hey, don't pick on my clams! Love 'em any way they are prepared.
Why are 'steamers' called steamers when they are boiled?
BTW, I'm from Mass. They are popular in all of New England.

I like fried clams; I was just using them as an example (there are fried clams stands all over the place in New England) of how Spam Musubi is equally ubiquitous in Hawaii, like the "Fish 'n Chips" vendors in coastal areas of the UK and Australia.

Both deep fried clams and clams casino are delicious.
Gotta have cocktail sauce w/extra horseradish for the deep fried ones.
Steamed clams....not so good.

This, and your mention of "yum" (which brought to mind Yum! Brands, which owns the Long John Silver's chain as well as other restaurant chains), reminded me of the one thing we lack here in Fairbanks (besides a Krispy Kreme or Velvet Creme doughnut shop)--a good "fish 'n chips" place like Long John Silver's, Captain D's, or Arthur Treacher's. Here, in the land where Alaskan King Crab reigns, it's almost heretical to express a preference for fish 'n chips, but my blood is too English to ever abandon it!
